Friday, July 25. Cloudy hot day. Little rain in mountains. Have been home all day. Myra has been home all day. Myra has had pain in right side. I am worried about it. She has been in bed all day. I had dinner at Cleones. Recd letter from Ralph Hardy from Wash DC. Gulls Were Miracle of God. Salt Lake City. A great grandson of Brigham Young said yesterday that the seagulls which saved Mormon pioneers from starvation came as a miracle of God. The gulls destroyed hordes of crickets which threatened Salt Lake Valley crops in 1848. Tribute to the birds was paid by Elbert R Curtis, descendant of the second Mormon president who led his flock westward. Curtis spoke during a ceremony at This Is The Place monument. The session launched the annual Days of 47 celebration. Those settlers did not pray in vain, Curtiss said. They believed and so do I, that they were saved by a miracle, by the intervention of a bird and a loving God. As Curtis spoke, flocks of gulls hovered overhead. They were attracted to the monument by bread rations, left for them each day. Sunday, July 27. Warm sultry day. Myra is better. I attended Pristhood meeting and Sunday School but did not attend fast meeting. Ate dinner at Cleones & Royals Charles Smart and Dorothy Sharp. Called this afternoon and returned to the ranch this evening. Oertel went to Salt Lake and Carrie back with Robert this evening. Dr Jr called me to ask about mother. Monday, July 28. Warm sultry day. Myra is better. No pain and leg has better circulation. I had lunch at Myrenes. Wrote letters about some small insurance policies Heaht & Accident.
