Show Monday, November 10. Nice day. Myra & I went to Orpheum this afternoon and saw Ivanhoe in picture very good. Dr Jr & Blanche called this evening. I did little work around the garden this morning. Have read some. Recd letter from Ally Cozzens. 494 W Arrow Fontana Cal. Peace of Just a Lull? In many respects Armistice Day has lost much of its meaning. That was true when World War II dimmed in the minds of all the significance of the anniversary of Nov 11, 1918. It was true even more when the third war in this series of global encounters. Korea came along. Perhaps the best evidence of this is that today, except for closing of government offices and banks, there is little observance of the day in Salt Lake City. Stores and schools remain open. There will be no major parade or other ceremonies. In a sense that is unfortunate, because Armistice Day does merit thoughtful attention. There is a lesson to be learned from the very lack of significance in our Armistice Day observance. The lesson is that enduring peace is not so easily won as we thought. We found that out when a new menacing, aggressive Germany arose from the ashes of the Nov 11, 1918, defeat. We found it out again when a new aggressive force arose to threaten freedom and peace only a few years after we beat down the aggressive threat of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan. We have learned the hard way that armistices, treaties and cease-fire battle lines do not guarantee an end to aggression and bloodshed. It is a good thing for us to remember this Armistice Day, for we may have still another armistice soon in Korea. It may again arouse hopes of peace, leading us again into relaxation and apathy. Armistice Day, by its very lack of significance, carries a profound lesson that peace is not won easily, or kept easily. If we study and restudy that lesson, maybe we can this time be alert enough, and peacefully aggressive enough, to make armistice mean peace and not just a lull between wars. Wednesday, November 12. Nice day. Clear. Little cooler. Myra & I went down to Woodys to see about printing family record sheets. Myrene & Cleone went to Salt Lake this evening to see opera or play at U of Utah. Dark nite. I am sorry they went. Oertel had ticket but has cold and did nto go. Recd letter from Littie Rich of Logan a splendid woman. widow of Geo S Rich. Have been home most of the day. Avons birthday 57 people over. Dear girl. Thursday, November 13. Nice day 62 day without rain. Beats all records in Utah. We went to hear Dr Sperry lectur on Book of Mormon. Very good. I attended Com. meetg of Sons of Pioneers. Have read White Indian Boy by Nick Wilson. Good Mother is better. |
