Sedan Squashed by TrailerDr. and Mrs. Vernon L. Ward and Dr. and Mrs. Frank K. Bartlett, of Ogden, miraculously escaped serious injuries last night when their heavy sedan was crashed beneath a toppled semi-trailer truck in Uintah.2 Ogden Doctors, Wives Have Miraculous EscapeUINTAH Two well-known Ogden physicians and their wives miraculously escaped serious injury or death last night about 745 when their heavy sedan was crushed when a semitrailer truck toppled on it.Reported in fair condition today in the Dee hospital is Dr. Vernon L. Ward, 55, of 2738 Fillmore Ave. He suffereda shoulder injury and bruises.His wife, Erma, 54, was reportedin "satisfactory" condition. She had three broken ribs.Treated and released to their home were Dr. and Mrs. Frank K. Bartlett, of 2703 Hill drive. They suffered minor cuts and severe body bruises. Both were reported resting well today.Investigating officers marveled at how the four managed to survive the mishap without more serious consequences. The Cadillac was crushed to the level of the seats on the right side and to the level of the fenders on the left.The rear trailer of the two section truck toppled onto the sedan on U. S. highway 89 at Kendell's junction after the driver lost control making the turn from U. S. highway 30.The truck was loaded with new television sets.The truck driver, Jack Sheldon Mattsen, 30, of 761 Polk Ave., was issued a traffic citation for failure to keep his vehicle under control.State Highway Patrolman FarIan Wood said Mattsen lost control of his truck in attempting to make a right turn onto U. S. highway 89 toward Ogden, The heavy truck went over the island of the divided highway and the rear section started to sway.Dr. Bartlett said the occupants of the sedan, traveling in the opposite direction on U. S. highway 89, were able to see that the rear section would topple onto them.He said Dr. Ward, who was driving, pulled far to the right and had almost stopped the sedan in an attempt to avoid the toppling trailer.It was all Dr. Ward could do, Dr. Bartlett said. It all happened so fast there was not much time for anything. All I know is that someone certainly had us all by the hand.
