Show be regarded as the president's ed¬ucational creed. He said: "We do not need more ma¬terial development; we need more spiritual development. We do not need more intellectual power; we need more character. We do not need more government; we need more culture. We do not need more law; we need more religion. We do not need more of the things that are seen; we need more of the things that are un¬seen." By CORRESPONDENCE Interest in public education is going forward by leaps and bounds. A very appreciable per¬centage of adults are now becom¬ing interested in extension courses and in correspondence courses. It is reported that private corre¬spondence schools in the United States enroll 3,500,000 persons yearly at a cost of at least $70,- 000,000. It is reported also in Massa¬chusetts that "there is a drift away from vocational university extension courses—a tendency to take courses for 'living' rather than 'for a living'." SCHOOL MOTTOS The principals of Chicago schools recently collected a set of mottos to be posted in prominent places in the schools. Ogden ap¬proves of these slogans and would adopt some of them such as: To the Public: This school de¬sires to serve you. The principal will be glad to receive your com¬ments. Citizens, welcome. Tell us what you think. Courtesy. You are entitled to it here. This is your school. Help us make it the best. Visitors always welcome. Sug¬gestions gladly received. The public be pleased. The principal will gladly receive your comments. America's service station, a public school. CONTRIBUTIONS The changing of the national concert date, the interruption of other things, seem to have cre¬ated a spirit of apathy among those who should contribute to make the band trip to the east a fact. Two thirds of the necessary money has been raised, and the remaining third should be raised within the next ten days so as to make the trip a dead certainty. We invite all who are interested to come forward with their con¬tributions and help the cause along. The Rotary clubs of Utah and Idaho are now asking a two-dol¬lar contribution from every club member to defray the expenses of the band's playing at the great Rotary International convention at Denver on June 15. Think what a wonderful advertisement this will mean to have the boys play before men and women from every city of every state in the United States and every city of every province of Canada, as well as many representatives from over the seas. The chamber of commerce, realizing the advantages of this trip to Ogden. recently appointed Mr. Charles Empey chairman of a committee to raise the necessary funds. On Monday night, next, the Elks give their big dance to help the fund. Every man that can wiggle a toe ought to be there with his best girl to make this function a grand success. |
