Show 3- fluctuations in the iron ore industry are related to but not coincidental with those of the steel industry or the general economy but will have some impact on it. By way of background the U. S. steel industry was self-sufficient from an iron ore standpoint until the end of World War II. Domestic iron ore production was ample to meet steel industry needs. As late as 1948 U. S. mines produced about one-half of the world's supply of iron units. Our production at that time was about three times that of Russia.
