Show 5- an iron ore standpoint. Europe and Japan as well as ourselves also must import a substantial amount of their ore requirements, and so we find ourselves in competition with these nations for foreign iron ore sources. As the standard of living in these countries has risen, their consumption of steel has also risen. The steel industry in Western Europe is increasing its capacity and has almost doubled its use of imported iron ore in the last five years. The Japanese are planning on trebling their pig iron production by 1970 and this will require the importation of four times the present volume of iron ore. The development of the large specialized ore carriers has made is economically feasible |
