Its newly acquired population contains some of the best managerial and technical talent in the country. The firms now oriented to defense will, I am sure, be giving consideration to what they can do to put their immense skills to work in non-defetise areas when and if this becomes necessary, and I have every confidence that they will achieve a real measure of success in their efforts. California today represents an attractive market that is being eagerly sought by every industry. Our state is an area in which people want to live and surely they will continue to come here if they can earn a livelihood. Others will come to spend their retirement in these pleasant surroundings. With what we have going for us, we can solve the problem in satisfactory measure if all of us - labor, industry, and government -work intelligently to create a healthy investment climate that will entice new industry to California and expand those industries now located here. Peace is not a threat but an opportunity to unleash our talent and ever-expanding knowledge better to provide for the insatiable cultural and material hopes of mankind here and elsewhere in the world. I suggest that now is the time not to lose our heads but to use our heads. We have a problem now - let's admit it - let's face the facts and do something intelligent about them.
