Show been accomplished here is not the goal, but a step -- the threshold to a greater fulfillment. Less than 10 years ago --in January 1954 -- when Utah first obtained a permit from the Navajo Tribe, the prospect was not so clear. The existence of coal in this area of the reservation had been known for a long time, but it had been mined only in minimum quantities, generally for domestic use locally. Neither the extent of the deposits nor the heat energy value of the coal as a fuel had been investigated. An extensive program of drilling and analysis told us that the grade of the coal would make it a satisfactory fuel. More importantly, we learned that within the area of our lease the deposits exceeded 400 million tons, now known to exceed 600 million tons. In these vast reserves, we had found a sleeping giant of potential energy. But centers of industry were hundreds of miles away and served by other fuels, and because of its grade and characteristics Navajo coal could not be economically shipped to them. - 2 - |
