Show advisability of new purchase commitments for real estate. From 1961 through 1965 we were net sellers of land, living off of our land inventories acquired in earlier years at favorable prices. In contrast, our investment in improved real estate tended to grow from '61 through '65 despite the fact that during this period we sold some of the real estate investments that we held. In the first half of 1966 these trends have been reversed and we have made new commitments to purchase undeveloped acreage while at the same time selling certain real estate investments, notably the Bay Mart in San Jose and the Seattle Parking Garage. The net effect of these transactions has still been to reduce the total amount of our net assets committed to the land development division, our investment now amounting to about 29% of the total. Income from land development set a new high in 1965 and the results for the first half of 1966 correspond closely to the comparable period of the preceding year. MINING - THE UPWARD THRUST However, the real upward thrust in Utah's profits must be attributed to the rapid growth in its mining and ocean shipping activities. We developed a young and imaginative mining organization -- highly skilled and gifted with foresight as well as good luck. We established targets for them to achieve where we felt that circumstances were favorable.
