Show In contrast to earlier years the greater part of the work under contract is being performed overseas and over half the backlog is represented by cost-plus fee contracts which in the past couple of years amounted to less than 10% of our backlog. Only one contract is presently causing us concern and that is the Manapouri Tailrace contract in New Zealand. We have already recorded substantial losses under this contract and have in our opinion a claim under the "latent conditions" provision of the contract and have so notified the owner. Despite the losses on Manapouri we presently feel that our construction will be profitable in the second half of the year as it has been in the first half, but beyond that no meaningful forecast can be made for profits thereafter will be dependent upon securing new contracts beyond those in our present portfolio. As for land development, because of the situation in residential housing and the stage of development of some of our projects, we do not anticipate that earnings in the second half of 1966 will be maintained at the record rate that prevailed in 1965 and the first half of 1966. However, land development has given a good account of itself in the past and I see no reason why it should not continue to do so in the long run. From what I have already told you it is logical to assume that mining will provide the key to Utah's profits in the foreseeable future just as it has in the past years that we have reviewed together. Let us deal with our affiliated companies first. Marcona last month brought into operation its new 2-million ton pellet plant and is now modifying its first plant to bring the capacity from 1-million tons to 1, 300, 000 tons - 12 - |
