Show April 4, 1968 REMARKS BY E. W. LITTLEFIELD DEL MONTE CONFERENCE, PEBBLE BEACH GENTLEMEN: Today I would like to address you in your capacities as fellow members of the Establishment, for I think that the Establishment is in some peril. It is being buffeted by strong winds that are increasing in tempo and may threaten the structure unless it is modified or the storm abates. The principal point of my concern lies with the widening "generation gap" and the reaction of the members of the establishment to the youth of our country. In a democratic nation such as ours business needs all the friends that it can get, and if we are to survive, we must capture the friendship and understanding of the majority of the youth of today, for the weight of their numbers will soon tip the scale for us or against us. The balance of power will fall in their hands for two reasons. First, because their numbers are growing in relationship to the older segment of the population. Second, because where my generation at their age was passive, today's youth care very deeply and, because they care, they are militantly active and determined to cause their voices to be heard. It does no good to decry their actions or to wait for them to come to us. Time is on their side, and they are already in the process of forming their judgments on the established order and expressing their dissatisfaction with things as they are. It is up to us to initiate the discussions, to get them to the peace table, and to win them to our point of view. I have no hope that we can convert the extremists among their numbers any more |
