But I remain convinced that the vast majority of the young today can be persuaded to follow an intelligent course of action to move mankind forward to a better life. What seems to be bothering them? I suggest that the principal seed of their discontent lies in the fact that they do not think that the establishment as it exists and as it has existed has done a very good job and they can muster much evidence to support their point of view. It does little good to tell them that our system has produced the highest standard of living in history, an explosion of knowledge unprecedented in history, great strides forward in the administration of justice and in the freedom and dignity of the individual. They will simply counter by saying that this may be a good job but it is simply not good enough. It is not good enough because peace is a product we cannot seem to produce consistently and poverty even in the United States is a plague we have not eradicated and ignorance is a condition among large segments of the population that we have not erased. The youth will charge us at least with two other failings. They will accuse us of being too concerned with the materialistic aspects of life and too little concerned with matters of the heart and the spirit of man, too concerned with coupons and not enough with compassion. The young also feel that the Establishment has a rigidity of viewpoint, that too often it reacts to external stimuli with an instinctive response that produces an answer that has already been tried and found wanting.
