It might indeed, in itself, make the ghetto school a better place, with more promise." This is the kind of reaction that will not win the young. They are not persuaded that the answer to the Negro problem in the United States is that the Negro here is better off than he is in Africa. Nor do they see merit in the fact that bad schools are better than no schools when it is in our power to change the situation. My own reaction to the article was different. I did not see the author as an angry young man offering thundering criticism unjustified by the conditions that he found, but rather as a young man who had worked in the ghetto schools, which I have never done, reporting on what he found and offering a constructive suggestion for bettering these schools that was worthy of further consideration and attention. As the first step in initiating a meaningful dialogue with the youth of the country, I suggest that our first task is to look inward and conduct a critical examination of ourselves by ourselves. Let's put to the test all that we now consider to be true and see if it will really stand that test. Certainly some of our older beliefs must be crumbling under the pressure of experience and the fact that they have not solved the problems but in some cases caused the problems to multiply. When we have truly done this, we will find that our differences with the young of today are greatly diminished, for we will be as concerned as they are about the principal problems that are on their conscience and should be on ours.
