Show and those having an unusual impact on the corporation as a whole, and it delegates broad powers to management to run the every day affairs of the company. But this does not tell the true story, for in the league of boards of directors the General Electric Board is the Green Bay Packers, the tops in its league. As a member of the Board, it is hard for me to make this point and at the same time retain the appearance of modesty. Suffice it to say, though I may not be of the quality of the other directors, make no mistake about it that I am proud to be among their number and to be associated as a Director of General Electric. In my second year as a General Electric Director I found that I was one of the two Directors whose turn had come to address the management group at dinner before the Annual Shareholders' meeting. In doing so I told them of an experience I had at Stanford when in my freshman days I was invited to the Woodside home of one of my new fraternity brothers. I went there expecting to meet the members of his family and when I arrived my friend intercepted me in the driveway and led me around to the other side of the house where I saw some 50 Stanford students seated on the lawn and facing someone in a canvasback chair with a canopy over its back, looking like subjects worshiping the ruling monarch seated on his throne. My friend said, "Come down and meet the old man", and I went expecting to find the usual type of San Francisco business tycoon, dignified and in a blue serge suit.
