Nine of the General Electric Board serve on The Business Council, in contrast to only 4 from Westinghouse and only 8 from General Motors. Three of the General Electric Directors have held high government posts, Neil McElroy and Tom Gates having served as Secretary of Defense and Bob Stevens having served as Secretary of the Army. Westinghouse can claim 1 Under-Secretary of the Army and one who has served as Special Assistant to the President on National Security Affairs. I know of no other Board whose membership carries so distinguished a record in terms of service in business and industry, in community affairs, and in the Federal Government at the highest level. Since one of the principal functions of the Board is to deal with matters out of the ordinary course of business, this wealth of demonstrated talent and wide experience is a treasure that the Directors bring to the General Electric Board. This would still not get the job done if it were not for the diligence that the Directors show in attending meetings. For the past three years the average attendance has been 92%, a remarkable record considering the demands on the Directors' time from other sources and the distance that many of us must travel to attend the meetings. Where conflicts of meetings are involved, they are resolved in favor of General Electric. Perhaps this is in part tradition and because it has been so it continues to be so. But, more importantly, I believe it stems from the honest conviction of all Directors that each of us benefits from the education, the stimulation and the pleasure we derive from participating in the
