Show But like all private universities -- large and small -- what it does require is a sufficient level of financial support to fuel its drive toward continued excellence. In large measure BYU stands apart from many another university in these troubled times. Here one finds special emphasis in teaching the ethical and moral values that are the foundation of our free democratic society. Here there is a proper appreciation of the role of the private enterprise system and the benefits that it has brought to the free world. Absent from its campus are the revolutionary activities that in a carefully contrived and coordinated program have disrupted the affairs of many of our great universities and have caused crises in campuses around the world. On an occasion like this and in times like these it is tempting to argue BYU's case in terms of these special qualities that are particularly appealing when our cherished institutions are challenged. But it would be a disservice to the larger cause of higher education to put undue emphasis on BYU's enduring and endearing virtues when its counterparts are in -- what I hope -- is temporary distress. Rather I would like to explore with you this afternoon: not merely the question of corporate support for Brigham Young -- but the more general case of the corporation's financial assistance to the private university as such. It is a case, in my view, that has its premises in very basic, bedrock considerations. -2- |
