But, if I may for a moment give those of us hopelessly over 30 our due, it seems to me that some of these students may be understandably unaware of those dimensions of reality that more generally come with a longer experience with life itself. We of the older generation could point out with considerable justification that we have played our part in the development of an economic system that has brought full employment and unprecedented and sustained prosperity in place of recurrent and deep depressions with widespread unemployment and hardship, a system of law and justice that is the finest guarantor of individual liberty and freedom that the world has yet devised, the finest educational system yet developed, and in more recent years more compassion and benefits for the overaged, the underprivileged, and the disadvantaged than in any preceding time in history. But we must not con fuse progress with perfection and perfection must remain our ultimate objective. It will not be reached until there is peace in the world and the full might of man can be applied to peaceful pursuits. What that longer experience generally reveals is that extremism has its own set of internal dynamics. It is essentially rhythmical and reactive in nature. When the pathological pursuit of individual license threatens the reasonable rule of social order, there is the almost certain result of an equal and opposite reaction -- a reaction in which a frightened and insecure concern for protection will tend to crush the legitimate -6-
