Show to its purposes, it by that very fact lets loose the process of internal decay. The contemporary university is not in decay, but it sometimes acts irrelevantly to its intrinsic purposes. And when it does, it must expect that its membership is going to be in contention. One must remember that all the actors in the drama the students, the faculty, and the administrators alike -- are all members of other and related societies: the family, the church, the community, the state. But they are not all equally advantaged members of these other societies. Some -- through no fault of their own -- are seriously disadvantaged. That unfortunate fact is bound to affect their performance in the community generally. The university is a component of the community -- sometimes not as relevant a component as it might be -- and one of its primary purposes is to provide the means whereby its students can best realize their full potential of mind and personality. The university prepares young men and women to take their place in the community -- both in the micro communities of family and neighborhood, and in the macro communities of the state and the family of nations at large. They should emerge armed with the best from the past and prepared to shape an even better future. In a developed society, the university -- second only to the family and the church -- is probably the most influencial seedbed of man's future there is. -9- |
