to hone continually its cutting edge of efficiency -- the fact remains, as all of us know from experience, that what motivates the more creative men in a corporation the most is not money, but the opportunity of accomplishing something genuinely significant. Those who condemn the responsible corporation as an essentially selfish social entity miss the point. Profit is indeed a powerful incentive. The corporation could not progress -- or even exist -- without it. But the pursuit of profit -- though a natural appetite in men -- does not by any means exhaust man's hunger for achievement. It is profit -- and the means it provides -- that allows men to pass beyond the mere struggle for subsistence, and seek the more specifically human goals of creative excellence. Many students today seriously question the social value of the corporation precisely in the manner they question the value of our other contemporary institutions. And their question about the corporation is essentially the same as their question about the university. They are asking: is the modern corporation really relevant to man's inner needs? Does it deserve to endure? Or must it be torn down, and be completely rebuilt with a more specifically human set of blueprints? That is the challenge the students are proposing.
