Show 60 Liquors, etc., wholesale or retail, at Schlesinger & Co's. commands a premium. A vast amount of salt is manufactured by the process of evaporation from the water of the Great Salt Lake. Population, 925. The town was divided last year, the County line causing the division, hence there is Hooper in Weber County and Hooper in Davis County; but irrigation facilities cannot be divided. The farming land is laid out in half-mile square blocks with streets four rods wide, running parallel. Town officers—Gilbert Belnap, Bishop; Charles Parker, First Counselor; John Flinders, Second Counselor. Emory W. Soule is Justice of the Peace, and Gilbert R. Belnap Constable. UINTAIL The town that is now known as Uintah was first settled in 1850, by the following heads of families: Daniel Smith, Henry Bexted, Louis Hardy, John Bybee, John Winwood and Joseph Hardy. It was organized ecclesiastically in the year 1852, as follows: Bishop, Abiah Wadsworth; Assistants, Ira N. Spaulding, B. Bybee, Sr.; Peace Officers: Justice of the Peace, B. Bybee, Sr.; Constable, H. Bexted. This settlement was known by the name of East Weber. The first school was opened in 1855. This town increased in num¬bers so fast that in 1857 it equipped four small companies of men to oppose what is known as Buchanan's Army, but it has never been so populous since the "move" of the Church the next season. The first Sunday School was organized in 1865, by Samuel Dye, and the first successful Library was put in circulation there in 1870 by the same person. In the year 1869 a large town was formed adjoining the western portion of the already settled town; the new settlers being store¬keepers, saloon keepers and others who had been the inhabitants of transient railway towns. The U. P. R. R. built passenger stations and also a large freight depot, from which all freight was shipped by teams for Salt Lake City and all points South, until the opening of the Utah Central railroad and its junction at Ogden with the U.
