A building that not only overpowered its surroundings, but the people in the city as well. Only one man noticed the glory of the rising sun, the magnificence of nature. He sat alone on his doorstep gazing at the rows of apartments before him; each exactly like the other except for the numbers on the door. Houses stacked on top of each other, layer upon layer, in order to conserve space. Ten families to a building, yet nowhere did the lines of communications buzz. Communication was something they. feared. People might question, They tower, think, were one dream, the in or even feel. that owned ones each town, that the controlled the people, and ruled the world. Mother Earth no longer was her own master, for it was ruled by Them. A world-wide government presided over by logical men and their computors. Man's emotions had created war so peace came through the annihilation of feelings. Emotions of any type must be prevented. Even the grass and the trees were gone. Bronze sculptures on top of green cement had replaced them. They explained it as the prevention of unnecessary work and waste of water, yet the logic went deeper. How the grass and trees had come to exist was a question they couldn't answer. Citizens might ask questions or think and this shouldn't happen It would destroy everything. The man laughed harshly at the irony of the situation. After thousands of years man had gained something he had long dreamed of, - peace, yet with its gaining he had lost his freedom, his feeling, self. They did not believe that man was and peace were compatable. ETH TN ® i i i, ee T.,~ him- as he Naanes ‘Howdy neighbor’’, he called out to the men who were pouring out of the buildings. ‘How's the wife and kids?’’ So what if they ignored him. They couldn't -care “ less about their kids so why should he? Those cdmputer picked wives and _programmed children wouldn't offer much enjoyment even if enjoyment was allowed. Some kind of peace. Why hadn't he been born with this built-in apathy? This was a question he had asked himself time after time these past sixteen years. Ever since he had been punished -as-a small child for asking strange questions, he had wondered. Now the time had come for him to take his place in this structured society. Today was his day to meet with Them and be placed in his niche. He would have no decision as to what his profession would be. The computors would logically decide. He rose and walked slowly toward the tower, now a harsh grey. His mind was spinning with questions. Would he have the courage to stand up to:‘Them, or would he conform like so many before him héd done. What was more important, freedom or peace? At the door of the tower he stopped, slid his identification card into the computor, and walked in through the opening door. A voice then politely told him to please report to room 416 for a final check and instructions. The atmosphere They had struggled hard for was one of caring but to him, They had failed entirely. He realized he was nothing more than a number, a pawn in some tragic game. He walked proudly into the room and shut the door. 3 “Awaiting final instructions, sir,’’ he said coolly. “Please sit down and make yourself comfortable. Your duties have been listed here and arrangements have been made. We have taken care of you well.” |
