Show 11 INFORMAL RECREATION STUDENT ACTIVITIES Location: Department of Campus Recreation Health and Physical Education Center (HPEC), Room 21 A CAMPUS ACTIVITIES BOARD Telephone: 626-7967 (CAB) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Cedric Howard For students who want to make the most of their college experience, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) is the ideal opportunity. CAB is comprised of eight student committees which plan, promote, and produce over 170 events each year, including weekly movies, nationally known entertainers, spontaneous midday events and annual events. Committees include: a swimming pool; ten (10) racquetball courts; seven (7) outdoor tennis courts; conditioning areas (weights/aerobics); gym floors Included are: billiards, racquetball, rodeo, skiing, softball, soccer, (basketball/volleyball/tennis); a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; fencing, swimming, ice hockey, rugby, bowling, volleyball, men's baseball, women's fast pitch softball and martial arts. People interested in joining or starting up a new club should contact the Campus Recreation Office, 626-6637. Coordinator: Lesa Moore This program provides the campus community the opportunity to use a variety of facilities for drop-in recreation. Facilities include aerobics classes; strength training; play fields; and an outdoor, onemile exercise trail. Facility schedules are available at the HPEC complex. Cinema, Cultural INTRAMURALS Location: CAMPUS RECREATION Location: Health and Physical Education Center (HPEC), Room 22 Telephone: 626-6972 Director: John Knight The Department of Campus Recreation is responsible for providing for the recreational needs of the students, faculty, staff and associated community members through a variety of programs and facilities. This is accomplished by involvement in the following programs: Intramurals, Informal Recreation, Sport Clubs and the Wilderness Recreation Center. COLLEGE BOWL Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 626-7424 Advisor: Cedric Howard College Bowl is a form of Jeopardy-with-an-Attitude as the Varsity Sport of the Mind. College Bowl consists of teams formed from clubs, honor societies, Greeks, or groups of friends which compete for campus honors and cash awards. The winning team and top players have an opportunity to represent Weber State in a regional tournament. Each team's knowledge and aptitude are tested on a variety of subjects, including history, mythology, current events, mathematics, international relations, literature and sports. Membership in these organizations provides students the opportunity to build life-long friendships through a mutual commitment to involvement in programs and activities which bebefit the individual, the campus and the community. In addition, membership provides students with support in their academic efforts, leadership opportunities and social interaction. Five fraternities - Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Gamma Chi, Sigma Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Psi - and five sororities Otyokwa, LaDianaeda, Lambda Delta Sigma, Sharmea, Sigma Gamma Rho - encourage all students to experience Greek Life. Participation opportunities are offered in individual, dual, and team sports for both men and women. Many activities are also offered on a co-ed basis. Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Room 250 Telephone: 626-6349 Open Hour is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. This time is set aside for the campus community to take advantage of the various available programs. The design for Open Hour is broad in nature and consists of campus, departmental, and organizational activities. The Open Hour is designed to achieve two basic goals: to expand the educational and cultural horizons of the Weber State University campus community, and to create and enhance the sense of community at WSU by fostering increased interaction and mutual support among faculty, staff, students, and the community. Formal programs during Open Hour include: Convocations Lecture Series This convocation series supplements formal classroom education by bringing in speakers of national stature and/or authorities in diversified areas. Attendees have the opportunity to examine specific issues, to be introduced to famous people and their lifestyles and values, and to explore new and unique ideas. Issues Forum The Issues Forum uses debates among members of the campus community, panel discussions, seminars, and question and answer sessions. The goal of this program is to enhance critical thinking and stimulate thought on a variety of topics, from local political issues to basic philosophical questions, and exposes the campus community to scholarly dialogue. Senate Activities ATE kayaks and canoes at nominal fees. The Center also coordinates outdoor recreational trips and instructional programs for individuals and organizations. This department has responsibility for the following: The Associated Students of Weber State University (ASWSU), Student Senate, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Student Community Service Learning Programs, Registered Organizations (ARO), Student Leadership Development programs, Greek Life (fraternities & sororities), Family Concerts, Open Hour & Convocations. An experiential environment for learning and practicing “life skills” is provided by empowering students and providing opportunities for leadership, personal development and service. Through participation in educational, social, cultural and recreational programs, Student Activities seeks to expand and enrich the entire campus and local community. Affirming the culture and heritage of traditionally underrepresented students. Il. CENTER GENDER EQUITY TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE Location: CENTER/GETAC Student Service Center, Suite 150 Telephone: 626-6082 Coordinator: Gloria Perez-Jensen The purpose of the Gender Equity Technical Assistance Center is to: a. Render technical assistance and training to school district administrators, teachers, counselors, parents, students, and the community regarding equity issues, particularly gender equity. b. Eliminate bias and stereotyping in the classroom. c. Assist all students to become economically self-sufficient. The Center is funded by a grant through the Utah State Office of Education with Carl D. Perkins Vocational funds and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, sex, or handicapping condition. Wildcat Lanes is a recreation center with bowling, billiards, and video games. The eight bowling lanes are complete with automatic scorers. Student UTA bus passes, class schedules, photocopies, and many more items are available at the service counter. The seventeen academic and non-academic senators are required to present programs which highlight and serve either their constituencies or the campus community. The senators work in conjunction with their respective Deans, departments, and area councils to produce at least two programs per quarter. Students can get information and counseling about academic, cultural, personal/social, and financial as well as immigration concerns. The office also provides orientation programs and planned activities to help international students have a satisfying university experience as well as to achieve personal and academic success.
