Other important activities are those department-sponsored events contributing significantly to the educational development of all students. The Departments of Art, Business, English, and Photography plan and sponsor student publications. The Department of English Language and Literature and the Department of Speech and Drama plan and sponsor student publications, debating, extempore and impromptu speaking, oratory, interpretative speech, drama, and radio. The Department of Music plans and sponsors opera, oratorio, choir, and ensemble singing as well as orchestra, band, choral, and instrumental activities. The Department of Physical Education plans and sponsors in-tramurals, intercollegiate football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, boxing, skiing, tennis, track, and field sports which are designed to develop in the participant the qualities of initiative, physical fitness, and good sportsmanship; to teach self-control, team and school loyalty, and cooperation; and to provide stimulating recreation for students, faculty, and people of the community. Community Service Bureau. This bureau provides programs and speakers for various community organizations. 8. Weber State College High School Debate Tournaments for secondary students from Utah and surrounding states. 9. Regional Science Fair for secondary students sponsored by Weber State College science departments cooperating with the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters. AwardsThe College supports a system of awards to stimulate participation in out-of-class activities, to encourage maximum achievement in a student's chosen field, and to recognize and promote outstanding services to the College. Awards are granted for leadership, service, and achievement on four levels: exceptional, outstanding, meritorious, and commendable. Recommendataions for awards are made by the instructional departments through the division heads and are directed to the Awards and Honors Committee, composed of faculty and student representatives. 26 Contributing also to the achievement of College objectives are the following programs: Weber State College Evening SchoolThe Evening School serves the needs of the adults and youth of the Ogden area who desire courses for personal improvement or who wish to increase their skills for occupational efficiency. It also serves those students who find it expedient to attend evening classes instead of day classes. Classes are held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The counseling service of the day school is available to students of the evening school. Weber State College Summer SchoolSummer School at Weber offers a full quarter of work. It is designed to serve the needs of the following: 1. High School Graduates who recognize the importance of securing additional academic training before entering the Armed Services, who wish to make up deficiencies before entering medical, dental, or engineering schools, or who wish to prepare for positions. 2. Adults who wish educational guidance, training, or general self-improvement. 3. College men and women who desire to accelerate completion of an academic degree. 4. Veterans who wish to take advantage of their GI schooling opportunities. 5. Employees who wish to improve their vocational skills. Off-Campus TrainingThe off-campus training program has grown out of the needs of workers and employers of the Weber State College area. This program is designed to teach occupational skills on the job and to offer theoretical and technical instruction. The College cooperates with the various military installations in planning and presenting specific courses of instruction. Supervisory TrainingWeber State College has for a number of years, in cooperation with industry, the military installations and other governmental agencies, offered specific supervisory training courses designed to improve and upgrade the positions of managers, supervisors, and foremen. Each course is planned to give specific information to the organization and workers concerned. Time, place, and credit hours are arranged for each program. Finally, the community itself, with its broad cultural, economic, social, and geographical advantages, helps the College realize its objectives. Students share these advantages in many ways: 1.
