Show Department of Mathematics Professor R. A. Clarke; Associate Professor J. LaMar Jensen; Assistant Professors, A. Parley Bates, Elwin F. Cammack,* Dick R. Rogers; Instructors, J. David Hepworth, David Tolman. Each course in elementary mathematics requires a knowledge of mathematical principles and an understanding and a working knowledge of the content of courses previously studied. Success in future mathematics courses is dependent upon this understanding and knowledge. For this reason, a student who received a grade below "C" in a prerequisite mathematics course will be required to repeat that course before he is eligible to register for the next course. Placement Tests Mathematics placement tests are required prior to registration of all students who have not completed*, the specified prerequisite courses from an accredited college with a "C" grade or better within the past two years. Any exceptions to these regulations will have to be approved by both the Head of the Mathematics Department and the Teacher of the class concerned. Arrangements to take these tests should be made at the Personnel Office, Room 139, in Building 1. It is the responsibility of the student to adequately review the material to be tested before taking any of these placement tests. While the Department aims to help students register for proper mathematics courses, primary responsibility rests with the student. Students enrolled in mathematics classes for which they do not have the required prerequisites may have their registration in such courses canceled at any time. A student who fails to get a "C" or better grade in a repeated course may be denied the privilege to re-register for that course. Baccalaureate Degree Requirements Department MajorThe following courses are required for the departmental major: B.A. Degree Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53, 54, and at least 33 credit hours of approved mathematics courses numbered above 101. These courses must be completed with a "C" grade or better. At least 12 credit hours of mathematics courses numbered above 101 must be earned at Weber State College. 208 Physics 61, 62, 63. German 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or the equivalent in another approved modern language. B.S. Degree The same as for the B.A. degree, except that students desiring a B.S. degree may select approved electives in the place of the modern language. It is recommended that majors planning graduate work obtain at least a reading knowledge of French or German or other approved modern languages. *On leave Secondary Teaching Major Requirements A minimum of 33 credit hours of Education courses: Education 111, 101, 104, 146, 157, 161, 112, and 102 are required. At least 10 credit hours of approved courses in each of the three general education groups (Humanities, Life Science, and Physical Science) and 12 credit hours of approved Social Science courses are required. Special courses required are Psychology 1 and Speech 12. A minimum of 42 quarter hours of approved mathematics is required as follows: Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53, and 153 and in addition 20 credit hours of approved courses numbered above 101 to be selected from Mathematics 127, 128, 131, 132, 146, 152, 147, 157. Other courses may be substituted by receiving approval of the Mathematics Department. An approved related minor is required. Departmental and Teaching Minors Students who wish to select a major or a minor in mathematics must first file an application with the chairman of the mathematics department. It is highly advisable that all majors and minors carefully check with their advisors and with the college catalog to make sure they are meeting all of the college requirements for graduation. Required mathematics courses: Mathematics 21, 51, 52, 53 and in addition at least 8 credit hours to be chosen from approved courses numbered above 101. Teaching minors should take Mathematics 152 and 153 unless otherwise approved by their advisors. At least one four credit hour course numbered above 101 must be completed at Weber State College. A grade point average of at least 2.0 in all mathematics courses is required of students desiring to graduate with 209 |
