FINANCIAL AID ScholarshipsIn accordance with State Law, Weber State College grants tuition scholarships to students from neighboring high schools. The number granted depends on the percentage of Freshmen in attendance during the previous year from each school. Selection of students for scholarships are made through the cooperation of high school principals and faculty college division chairmen, and the Committee on Scholarships. Community, business, professional, and fraternal organizations grant scholarships to deserving Weber State College students. Senior institutions of learning annually extend scholarships to Weber State College graduates. The college, through its Awards and Honors Committee, avails itself of such opportunities to obtain scholarships for its graduates. Included among these types of grants are those offered by the University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, as well as by many senior institutions outside the state. Sponsor ScholarshipsWeber State College patron, alumni, school organization, and community group scholarships are open to qualified students. Stipends are for either partial or full educational expenses as determined by the individual scholarship grant. Prominent among the sponsors providing scholarship money are: Kiwanis International, Commercial Security Bank, First Security Foundation, Rotarians, American Business Women's Association, Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Janet Wade Peterson Trust, Ogden Eagles and Ogden Eagles Auxiliary, Florence Stuenenberg Endowment, Bamberger Foundation, Weber County Medical Association Auxiliary, Thomas D. Dee Memorial Hospital (nursing, X-Ray, medical technology), Parent-Teachers Associations, National Postal Transportation Association and Auxiliary, Ogden Soroptomist Club, Lydia Tanner Memorial Fund. AssistantshipsDeserving and capable high school graduates are granted assistantships for stenographic or laboratory 60 work in the college departments. These awards give financial assistance, excellent experience, and highly desirable professional contact with departmental faculty members. Selections are made by the faculty members concerned, the Scholarship Committee and the Placement Office. Loan FundsThe college maintains a student aid fund administered by the Student Aid Committee. Loan funds available are the following: 1. The Weber State College Faculty Women's Fund, a small loan fund to assist a limited number of students. 2. The Ogden Rotary Club Fund, a sizable loan fund for worthy students. 3. The Wheelwright Student-Faculty Loan Fund, established in 1946 by David R. Wheelwright. The contribution of $2,000 was made with the idea that it be a perpetual trust fund to be loaned to worthy, needy students and also to faculty members. 4. The National Defense Act of 1958 authorized loans to students who are in attendance at, or want to attend, institutions of higher learning and who qualify according to the terms of the Act. Application for these funds may be made to the College Treasurer. PLACEMENT AND FOLLOW-UP SERVICE The purpose of the Weber State College Placement and Follow-up Service is two-fold: (1) to assist students in securing part-time employment while attending college, and (2) to assist graduates in obtaining permanent positions. The college cooperates with the local employment office of the Utah State Department of Employment Security to find suitable employment opportunities for students and to maintain current and accurate information concerning employment and occupational trends. THE WEBER STATE COLLEGE UNION The Weber State College Union has been provided to assist the student to live a more balanced college life. Students, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to use the facilities and services available. Reservations for meeting spaces and other facilities should be made well in advance. For a list of services available and a statement of policy concerning the operation of the Union, refer to the descriptive brochure available at the Union Building Director's Office.
