Show Fugitive Captured, (Cont'd) Fugitive in custody after firing semiautomatic handgun from inside car INSIDE: Parole agent survives dangerous meeting in Ogden with area fugitive/1B BY MARK GRAY_ Standard-Examiner staff mgray@standard. net OGDEN A fugitive wanted in an attempted homicide out of Clearfield was in good condition after leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 15 Tuesday during rush-hour traffic, firing bullets at pursuing officers and at least one passing vehicle near the Weber/Box Elder county line. No officers were injured in the Wood chase, which involved the Utah Highway Patrol and Weber County deputies, and no officers returned fire, said Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Klint Anderson. Anderson said it's likely officers didn't return fire since traffic was fairly heavy around 4:15 p.m. Brian Wood, 37, was transported to McKay-Dee Hospital with a head wound, likely caused by glass shards, was retrieved by police. Wood finally lost control of the vehicle about one-fourth mile north of the 12th Street off-ramp in Ogden after tire spikes were placed on the road, deflating several of his tires. Spikes are not commonly used because they are considered a use of force, but authorities thought they were warranted on this occasion to protect the public, Anderson said. Troopers and sheriff's deputies immediately surrounded the vehicle and detained Wood before he was trans- ported by ambulance. Initially believing he had a more serious injury, a medical helicopter was called but was later canceled. "He was talking to paramedics as they transported him, I'm told," Anderson said. Southbound I-15 lanes were closed for more than three hours near the area as investigators tried to piece together the scene that spanned more than five miles, considering where the first shot was fired in Farr West and where the vehicle eventually rested facing southwest, tired deflated. Traffic traveling north nearly came to a standstill as drivers viewed the wreckage. While shooting most the rounds, Wood had his hand out of the window, Anderson said. However, Layton resident Frank Dawson said Wood didn't have his hand out the window as he fired three shots at his F-350 Ford truck but rather fired from inside the car. Bullet holes could be seen in the windshield of the Datsun. "I was in the fast lane, and I watched this car coming really quick," he said, "as he passed he fired three shots at my truck. ... I saw the muzzle flash three times really quickly." One of bullets hit the pas- since he fired his semiautomatic handgun from inside his car, a gold Datsun 280 ZX. A small pool of blood could be seen near the stopped vehicle he had been driving, along with bags and clothing that had been in the vehicle. After receiving a tip that Wood was in the area, Clearfield police spotted him at the Flying J in Farr West. Wood, spotting the police, fled the scene, traveling south on I-15 at speeds of about 85 mph, shooting at chasing officers. It's not known how many shots he fired, Anderson said. The handgun senger-side door of the white truck, another striking the right front wheel near Exit 350. Dawson said he did nothing to provoke the shooting, speculating that Wood wanted him to get into an accident to occupy police. "That first bullet hit and it sounded like a hammer hitting a piece of metal," he said. Dawson said he then backed off to try and get the car license plate while calling 911, before realizing troopers were chasing the vehicle. "I wasn't going to let him get away," he said. "I'm shaken up. I was shaking like a leaf during it. I was in total absolute horror. I mean, he looks into your eyes and he's shooting at you." Aside from the new charges from Tuesday's highway shooting, Wood still faces charges of aggravated assault, parole violation, possession of a deadly weapon with intent to assault and possession of a controlled substance. Clearfield detectives said Wood stabbed a man in the neck three times as a friend fought with another man at the Super 8 Motel in Clearfield Dec. 6. Police believed they were hot on his trail but had a hard time catching him since he jumped from motel to motel to resist capture. A woman was also with Wood during Tuesday's shooting, but she is not facing charges Anderson said, nor was she injured. |
