Show February 16, 2004 Old traffic signal overheats, dies MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE A 60-year-old traffic signal at the intersection of 1200 West and 400 North has finally given up. Mayor Keith Butler reported the components in the signal box had overheated and fused together, rendering the signal useless. The light was installed to serve vehicles entering Defense Depot Ogden in the 1940s, and when the base closed, the city inherited the signal. Butler said he had hoped the light would last until spring when the intersection is scheduled to be redesigned. But it turns out the intersection doesn't qualify for a traffic light. It has failed to meet requirements twice in recent years. "I guess we got all the life out of the light we could before having to put in the four-way stop as UDOT suggests," Butler said in a news release. New stop sign should be in place sometime in the spring. Until then, the signal will remain flashing red in all directions. February 22, 2004 Man killed after crash into bridge PLAIN CITY No one knows why a Marriott-Slaterville man crashed into a bridge instead of entering it Friday night. Donald Whitten, 69, died in his 2001 Oldsmobile after crashing at about 4150 W Pioneer Road, according to the Weber County Sheriff's Office. Whitten was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Janice VanOrden said. Apparently, he was heading east on Pioneer Road when he drifted off the roadway, smashing into the bridge. Whitten was traveling alone at the time and wearing a seat belt. Investigators don't suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash, VanOrden said. The incident is still under investigation. |
