Show Volume VI Issue 12 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter December 2004 1140 West 400 North - Phone 627-1919 Christmas Message As this Christmas season approaches, it is my hope that we appreciate and reflect upon the freedoms that are often taken for granted. As a veteran of the Korean War, I often think about our young men and women in the military serving their country. Let us remember them this holiday season as they protect the freedoms we enjoy. Also, may we remember the unique and precious history of our country. Our founding fathers sacrificed much to bring to pass the four freedoms celebrated in the art of Norman Rockwell: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from fear, and freedom from want. We enjoy bounty and prosperity in this county beyond imagination of many others in the world. Remember that our freedoms come at a cost, and that cost includes the time and talents of the many individuals that make our democracy possible. The bustle, shopping, parties, and activities of the holidays can be overwhelming. Lest we forget, there lies within each of us the capacity to be grateful and appreciative to our neighbors, community, and nation this holiday. I wish each of you a happy holiday. Keith H. Butler, Mayor Weber Fire District - Safety Tips for the Holidays Weber Fire District is happy to pass along some tips from the U.S. Fire Administration to help families avoid the devastation a fire can bring during the holidays. Live Tree Precautions Tree Selection. Needles should be green, flexible, and firm on the branches. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified if they drop a high number of needles when bounced on the ground. Tree Care. Set-up a tree in a safe location in the home away from all heat sources. A tree near a fire place will dry out faster and become a fire danger. Common sense dictates that people should not smoke near a tree. Keep your tree stand filled with water, and trees should not be left up longer than two weeks. Tree Disposal. As soon as a tree is dry, it needs to be promptly disposed. Your tree can be hauled away by your waste disposer. Never place a tree its or branches in a fireplace or stove. Artificial Trees. If you opt for an artificial tree, make certain that it has a fire resistant label. If the tree is metal or aluminum, avoid using lights or products that can conduct electricity and cause a shock. Holiday Decorative Lighting Indoor Lights. Before installing lights, inspect them for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in insulation, broken or cracked sockets, excessive kinking, and excessive wear. Use only lighting approved for the use you intend. It is wise to unplug lights before bed or leaving home. Outdoor lights. Use only lighting approved for outdoor use. Turn of power supply to outdoor outlets while installing lights. Run cords above ground and keep cords free from water and ice. Electrical Outlets. Do not overload electrical outlets. Avoid linking more than three strands of lights, unless directions indicate that it is safe to do so. Connect strands light to an extension cord before plugging them into an outlet. Check wires periodically to make sure they are not warm to the touch. Holiday Decorations Use only non-flammable decorations and keep them away from all heat sources. Candles should be used in a stable, non-combustible holder. Never leave a lighted burning candle unsupervised. Make sure all smoke detectors are in working order. Keep a UL listed multi-purpose fire extinguisher in the home for an emergency. Have an escape plan for your home and practice it with your family. The emergency number for fire, sheriff, and ambulance is 9-1-1. WEBER COUNTY RABIES CLINICS Weber County Animal Service will host three clinics during the winter. Rabies shots are $7, and dog licenses |
