Show State Title (Cont'd), October 20, 2004 Marriott-Slaterville City's Lindsey Slater places tenth. Natalie Haws finished ninth and the Silver Wolves' Lindsey Slater was 10th. "I've run faster times before this, but the conditions were tough today," Meyer said. "I'm just so happy that we were able to win state." Perhaps the scariest statistic about Fremont isn't its dominance this season, its the fact that its top seven runners are underclassmen. Ricks, Meyer, Katie Chugg and Slater are juniors, while Jesse Chugg is a freshman. The Wolves sixth runner is junior Katie Pluim, while seventh runner Heidi Krebs is a freshman. "These girls are just awesome," said Fremont coach Amber Tingey, who took over the reins of the program this season after longtime coach Art Hansen stepped down. "I didn't expect us to run as well as we did today, especially with the course conditions. I think there is a little extra pressure at state, because everyone that comes down here wants to do well. It just feels good that the girls were able to accomplish this." The battle for second and third in the team standings proved to be a close race between Region 1 rivals Weber and Davis, with the Warriors edging out the Darts 102-104. While Davis' top two runners, Marler and Haws, finished in the top 10, Weber made a big push behind Anna Tanner, who finished 12th. The Warriors' Kelsee Green and Angela Baker finish 15th and 16th, followed by the Darts' Jami Dixon. Weber finally pulled ahead for good when its fourth and fifth runners, Whitney Beck and Kris-tie Binks, finished 29th and 30th to get all five runners across before Davis. "This was our best finish since 1981, so I'm just thrilled with the way the girls ran today," Weber coach Alan Rawlins said. "Davis and us are really evenly matched and they were able to get us at the region meet. We knew hat we had to run more con-rolled this time and we came but and settled in our pace ROBERT JOHNSON/Standard-Examine 5-A girls competitors run uphill during the state cross country championship in Salt Lake City Wednesday. early. ed.
