Show Silver Wolves' runners race for fifth straight title Strong and young cross country team returns this season INSIDE: Former Lakers' star returns as Softball coach / 3B BY JUSTIN JOHNSON_ Standard-Examiner correspondent jjohnson@standard.net PLAIN CITY Their nickname might be the Silver Wolves, but there is nothing second-rate about Fremont High's girls cross country program. With four consecutive state championships already tucked under their belts, the future might be even brighter for the Wolves, who return their top four runners from last year's state 5-A title team. Led by sophomores Lexie Meyer (fourth), Cassie Ricks (sixth), Katie Chugg (11th) and Lindsay Slater (14th), Fremont overpowered league rival Davis by a 14-point margin (59-73) in last season's state championship meet at Sugarhouse Park and Highland High School. In an season-opening intersquad exhibition meet last Wednesday at Fremont, the quartet (now juniors) posted individual times between eight and 51 seconds faster than those from the 2003 title meet, with a fifth runner freshman Jesse Chugg coming in at Annie Spencer from Marriott-Slaterville City is shown second from left Top of Utah state champions GIRLS Box Elder 1989 Fremont 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 Logan 1991 Mountain Crest 1990, 1991, 1998, 1999 St. Joseph 2002, 2003 Weber 1981 BOYS Ben Lomond 1989 Bonneville 1978, 1979, 1981, 1985 Box Elder 2000 Davis 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 2001, 2002 Mountain Crest 1996, 1997, 1998 Ogden 1997, 2000, 2001 St. Joseph 1991, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 Viewmont 1982, 1983, 1987, 1991 Weber 1984, 1986 MATTHEW HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner Members of the Fremont High girls cross country team run through a practice session last week.
