State of the City Marriott-Slaterville City was formed in 1999, almost 20 years ago. Prior to that Bill MoitIs was the Chair of Marriott Township and Keith Butler was the Chair of Slaterville Township when the state legislature passed a measure to eliminate townships, threatening our communities. At that moment the leaders from both townships met and coirunenced the incorporation of Mamott-Slaterville City. Pressure came from all sides, as Fan- West tried to annex a large segment of Slatei-ville. Ogden sought to expand west with the closure of Defense Depot Ogden. Plain City considered taking a northwest segment for a large residential development. The communities would have been picked apart. Residents knew that our heritage would be lost like other communities in the county swallowed by larger cities. Neither Mamott or Slaterville was eligible to incorporate on their own, so after meetings and petitions, the con-ununities opted to merge. In August of 1998, incorporation was accomplished with 87% voter approval. Keith Fl. Butler was elected Mayor in March 1999, along with the first City Council. The City held an incorporation event on July 1, 1999, where residents signed the Article of Incorporation that were filed with the Lt. Governor. Martiott-Slaterville City started with a $17,000 loan from Weber County. It was paid back within a few months and that has been the only debt that the City has ever had. For nearly 20 years we have prospered. To this day, Marriott- Slaterville City imposes no property tax. The City has accomplished many successes. It has established a stable local government, implemented a General Plan supported by the residents, created and managed parks, preserved open space, improved infrastructure, provided cost-effective services, constructed a conununity center, improved law enforcement, created a pressurized irrigation system, hosted outstanding community events, implemented emergency management, and many other services. The City has benefitted from a wonderful professional staff over the years. Also many volunteers have worked hard to support this community. Our staff has raised millions in grant funds over the last two decades to pay for projects and infrastructure, saving you, the residents, from a property tax. As the rest of the nation's infrastructure crumbles, our coi-mnunity is, for the most part, new md improving. Now times are changing as Keith H. Butler ends his tenns as Mayor and Scott Van Leeuwen has become the second Mayor of Marriott-Slaterville City. Erin Holley and Delbert Hodson will continue as members of the City Council. A council member will be appointed this month to fill a vacancy. The Planning Commission will also have some vacancies to fill. Expect a quick transition with the new administration. Staff will be busy updating policies and ordinances under the new administration as the City continually seeks to improve. We look forward to the bright future ahead as we continue our traditions and serve the community. May each of you enjoy a wonderful New Year.
