Yard Waste and Storm Water As we maintain our lawns and gardens this summer remember that storm water can carry pollutants into our water system. To protect our water from contamination, here are a few helpful tips when working in the yard: ► Apply fertilizers only when necessary and at the recommended amount. ► Apply fertilizer as close as possible to the period of maximum uptake and growth for grass and other plants. ► Avoid fertilizing near waterways or any storm drain. ► Avoid over-watering lawns and gardens because this can carry away fertilizer from your lawn to the water system. ► Fill Fertilizer spreaders on a hard surface so that spills can easily be cleaned up. ► Properly store unused fertilizers and properly dispose of empty containers. ► Use native plants, shrubs, and trees to reduce the amount of water and fertilizer needed. Recycle yard waste, such as grass clippings or leaves, for mulch or compost. DO NOT dump clippings or yard debris in waterways! Properly dispose of yard waste. Pollution can cause severe and permanent health problems and must be taken seriously. The storm water systems are designed for storm water only. Keep our water clean and never put any oil, fuel, fertilizer, or anything else besides storm water into drains. $500 REWARD A $500 reward is offered by Marriott-Slaterville City for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of individuals who dumped debris at parks, trails, roadsides, or damaged mailboxes. Report any information to the Weber County Sheriff by contacting non-emergency dispatch at 801-629-8221.
