Dig Four Mile Hole For Oil, Set Record Ogden Standard Nov 21st 1955 FORTH WORTH, Tex. An oil well crew drilling ever deeper in a hole, already more than four miles into the depths of the earth has encountered temperatures of perhaps 340 degrees Fahrenheit, or hot enough to bake a cake. The well, in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, sets a new record every foot deeper it is drilled. It is already 21,703 feet deep 221 deeper than the previous record set in California. If any deeper hole has ever been drilled in the world, American oil men do not know about it. The old record was in the Paloma field of Kern County, Calif., a dry hole at 21,482 feet. The crew has been drilling since Feb. 26. They drilled to 19,752 feet in the 131 days, then stopped and ran extension tests. That took 71 days. Since then they have been making about 34 feet in a day. They have used 110 drilling bits. They are now in geologic formations which were deposited 25 million to 30 million years ago.
