Four Score and Twelve The world spotlight on Gettysburg incidental to President Eisenhowers residence on his farm there is a reminder that Lincolns historic Gettysburg Address was given 92 years ago today. The Civil War President spoke at the national cemetery near the sleepy Pennsylvania town, his speech being so brief that the news photographer did not get his camera adjusted in time to take a picture. Contrary to popular myth, Lincoln did not prepare his speech on the train but carefully and thoughtfully at Washington before leaving, and the text was revised at Gettysburg. In his delivery he inserted the phrase under God in the passage, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. Arriving at Gettysburg the previous evening, President Lincoln was greeted by a noisy crowd and was urged to speak. In my position, he explained, it is somewhat important that I should not say any foolish thing. Then, according to a New York Tribune account at the time, someone in the crowd shouted, If you can help it. Mr. Lincoln was not unaccustomed to heckling and criticism. One newspaper even criticized him for having a bodyguard of soldiers on the trip to Gettysburg, even though the war was still raging. Mr. Lincoln must have yearned for a measure of the warm acceptance that flows toward the convalescing Mr. Eisenhower at Gettysburg today.
