McKay Announces Flans For Third Europe Temple By Jack M. Reed Tribune Church Writer A third temple site in Europe is under consideration by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, President David O. McKay announced Thursday upon his return to Salt Lake City. The church leader did not elaborate on possible location of the proposed temple nor indicate when details might be made public. Five Week Trip He had been on a five week trip to Europe, during which he dedicated the churchs first European temple near Bern, Switzerland; broke ground for another temple at New Chapel, near London, England, and dedicated an LDS chapel in Paris, France. It was the most momentous trip we have ever taken, President McKay said as he alighted from a United Air Lines plane with his wife, son and daughter in law, Dr. and Mrs. Edward R. McKay, and secretary, Miss Clare Middlemiss. They posed patiently for photographers at the foot of the airplane ramp and then Mrs. Edward McKay excused herself, saying, Ive got to go kiss my children. I cant wait another minute. Greeted the Party Her children were among several dozen family members, friends and church officials who greeted the traveling party at the Salt Lake Municipal Airport as the plane wheeled to a stop at 420 p.m. One of the first to extend greetings to President McKay was Sen. Arthur V. Watkins (R Utah), the states senior U.S. senator. Speaking of the United States as a whole, the church leader said. Nothing we have ever done nothing that I know of equals the choir trip of engendering good will. Referring to Tour He was referring to the European concert tour of the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir, which concluded last Saturday in Paris. The money invested in that trip was the best investment we have ever made, President McKay commented about the choirs tour, estimated to cost some 3750,000. If it had cost twice as much, it would have been worth it. I have never been more proud of any organization, the church leader added. It really was one big ovation and they merit every word that has been said. Highlight of Tour One highlight of the European trip for both President McKay and the choir was the dedication Sept. 11 of the temple in Bern. President McKay officiated and the choir participated. All phass of the temple opening were highly successful, according to President McKay, who observed his 82nd birthday while in Europe. He rported that construction will begin in March on the London Temple, ground for which was broken, with the choir participating, Aug. 27. Then the spiritual leader of more than 1,250,000 persons throughout th world announced We have a site under consideration for another temple in Europer. He didnt disclose the location. He said he enjoyed the food and good company in Europe, he hadnt had a moments illness, and it was a glorious trip, but were glad to be home. |
