Show DESERET NEWS, Salt Lake City, Utah, Tuesday, November 21, 1950 Mrs. Edward I. Rich, of Ogden, receives some pre Thanksgiving help from Granddaughter Carolyn Rich as she plans for family Thanksgiving dinner. THEYRE CITY DWELLERS NOW Grandparents Make Thanksgiving Day By SALLY HUMPHRIS It used to be Over the river and through the wood, to grandmothers house we go, but today grandmother along with grandfather are city dwellers and instead of traveling by sleigh, Thanksgiving dinner guests will arrive in an automobile. A pair of Ogden grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Edward I. Rich, will be spending their 56th Thanksgiving as man and wife this coming Thursday. Almira Rich can remember many a holiday when the city was snowbound and her doctor husband would get a call just as Tom Turkey was placed on the table with all the trimmings. There was nothing for the kindly doctor to do, but leave and deliver the expected arrival. Thanksgiving or not, dinner piping hot and the plump bird ready to be carved, off hed trek. But Thanksgiving 1950 will be. different. Dr. Edward is now retired and will know that once dinner is on the table, hell not have to dash off before hes even sampled a drumstick. Almira Rich is happy with the knowledge that nothing will disturb the family this holiday. But she is also thankful for the years that she and the doctor have shared together good years every one. The gathering of the clan this Thursday wont be quite complete, however. Of the Richs seven children four are out of town. And many of the 27 grandchildren are away, too. All of the great grandchildren wont be present this Thanksgiving to grab for the desired wishbone. Among those sharing the glad tidings and giving thanks with Dr. and Mrs. Rich will be daughter Mrs. Junius H. Smart of Beverly Hills and her sons Charles and Que who are attending the University of Utah along with their married sister Carlyn wholl come up after the Utah USAC game with her husband Dick Sweet. Another granddaughter attending the University will be present even though her parents are unable to be in Utah. She is Ruth Rich, daughter of Dr. Thair Rich, stationed with the Army in Texas. Yes thanksgiving 1950 will be mighty joyous at the Rich household. And when the grandchildren pile out of their cars after the drive up from Salt Lake City they wont spot Almira Rich with a cap on since shes a very modern grandmother but the ending of the well known poem still holds true. Now grandmothers cap I spy! Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding on? Hurrah for the pumpkin pie! Into the warming oven goes the platter for Mister Turkey as Mrs. Rich and Granddaughter Carolyn make certain all is in readiness for the Thursday feast. |
