Ralph W. Hardy Named CBS Vice President Special to the News NEW YORK CITY Ralph W. Hardy, former Utahn and nationally known broadcasting industry official, will become a vice president of Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., effective Sept. 1, it was announced Friday. Election of Mr. Hardy to the vice president post was announced by Dr. Frank Stanton, president of CBS. Mr. Hardy, presently vice president of the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters, will be in charge of CBS operations in Washington, D.C. Simultaneously with the CBS announcement, NARTB officials announced Mr. Hardy was resigning his vice presidential post with the association. Resigns Position Harold E. Fellows, president of NARTB, said he was accepting Mr. Hardys resignation with a feeling of mixed regret and good wishes. I need not underscore the themendous contribution you have made to the nations broadcasters during the six years you have been an executive of the association, Mr. Fellows wrote to Mr. Hardy. Since 1949, Mr. Hardy has been in the national picture in the broadcasting industry. At that time he became director of the radio division of the NARTB. From 1950 to 1953, he held the job as NARTB director of government relations. He became vice president of the association in February, 1953. Formerly With KSL Prior to his appointment to the national association, Mr. Hardy was assistant general manager of Radio Station KSL in Salt Lake City. He became affiliated with KSL in April 1937. Mr. Hardy held various district and regional posts with the NARTB before going to Washington. In 1944 he headed the program managers committee for the 14th District. He also was appointed to the associations national program managers executive committee. Early in 1947, the association established the educational standards committee with Mr. Hardy as first national chairman. In this capacity he inspected radio training facilities at schools throughout the nation. Active in Advertising He represents the NARTB as a member of the board of directors of the National Advertising Council and is a member of the Doard of governors of the Association of Better Business Bureaus. He was appointed by former secretary of Commerce Charles sawyer as the first advertising advisory committee named by the Commerce Department. Mr. Hardy is a member of the U.S. National Commission on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and attended the annual conference of that group last December in Uruguay. He is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He was a former bishop of the East Ensign Ward in Salt Lake City and a former assistant general superintendent of the Young Mens Mutual Improvement Assn. He is still a member of the YMMIA General Board.
