Show TOUGHER THAN EVEREST? British Expedition Climbs Towering Himalayan Peak Reuters News Agency DARJEELING, INDIA, June 2 A British expedition led by Dr. Charles Evans has conquered Mount Kanchenjunga, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, it was reported here Thursday. The expedition stopped only a few feet from the summit of the 28,146 foot Himalayan peak, in order to avoid offending the local Sikkimese people who belive their gods live there. Mountaineering circles here were astounded by the feat because Kanchenjunga was believed to be far more difficult to climb than 29,002 foot Mount. Everest, which was conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand beekeeper, and his Sherpa guide, Tensing Norkay, in 1953. Everest is the worlds highest peak. Dr. Evans, leader of the party that scaled Kanchenjunga, was a member of a 1952 expedition to Mount Everest. Todays Chuckle Appearances can be deceptive.
