Baccalaureate Degree Requirements The Department of Speech and Drama grants the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Students intending to take either must complete 45 to 60 hours of satisfactory work in speech and drama according to the specific requirements. Two types of majors are offered: a Speech and Drama major for prospective Secondary Education teachers, and a Departmental major in Speech and Drama with an emphasis in Speech or Drama. The Department strongly recommends that students take the B.A. rather than the B.S. degree by completing 24 hours in one foreign language, provided they do not have the high school equivalent. (Two full years of high school language is equivalent to 15 quarter hours of college work.) Speech and Drama Major: Students majoring in Speech and Drama must complete 45 to 60 quarter hours of approved lower and upper division courses including 2 or 3, 5, 7, 12, 15, 40, 50, 60, 65, 67, 107, 140, 153, 190, and English 11. To complete major requirements, a student must choose at least one course from the following: Speech 112, 150, 155, 165; English 111, 112. The following courses are also recommended: English 60, 84 or 89, 160, 164, 165. Students in education with a teaching major or minor in Speech and Drama must complete the same requirements as a Speech and Drama composite major or minor, plus Speech 119. Speech Emphasis: Students emphasizing Speech must complete 45 to 60 quarter hours of approved lower and upper division courses including Speech 2, 3, 5, 7, 12, 15, 40, 50, 65, 107, 110, 112, 115, and English 11. To complete major requirements a student must choose at least one course from the following: Speech 155, 157, 165; English 111, 112. Also recommended are English 84, 89. Drama Emphasis: Students emphasizing Drama must complete 45 to 60 quarter hours of approved lower and upper division courses including Speech 2 or 3, 5, 7, 40, 50, 51, 52, 65, 67, 107, 140, 150, 153, 165; English 60, 84 or 89. To complete major requirements a student must choose at least one course from the following: Speech 112, 154, 157, 166, 190; English 84 or 89. The following courses are recommended: Speech 12, English 60, 160, 164, 165. 151 |
