During orientation, students will become familiar with: ¢ Registration through the Touch-Tel Automated phone system ¢ Campus policies and procedures ¢ Using their E-mail accounts ° Accessing the university's home page on the internet * Options for academic majors and minors ¢ Scheduling courses ¢ Campus life, activities, and recreation ¢ Variety of learning opportunities available at the university STUDENT RECRUITMENT SERVICES Admissions Advisors: Ammon Bennett, Kristen Olsen, Andrew Young Location: Student Service Center, Room 210 Telephone: (801) 626-6050 The Office of Student Recruitment Services is the liaison between prospective students and the University. Staff from this office visit high schools and community colleges within the state and selected schools in neighboring states. These visits are used to inform potential students, educators, and parents of the educational programs and opportunities available at Weber State University. Campus visits may be scheduled through the Office of Student Recruitment Services. UPWARD BOUND SUPPORT SERVICES Location: Annex 10 Telephone: 626-6798 Coordinator: Dave Trujillo Upward Bound Support Services is designed to provide a precollege educational experience for selected high school students in Davis and Weber Counties. Program personnel offer both a summer residential program at the university and a tutorial program during the academic year at five target high schools. Students must meet the Federal guidelines set by the Department of Education in order to participate. Through its referral services, the center publishes opportunity listings, registers service hours, and provides recognition to WSU volunteers. FAMILY CONCERT SERIES Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Room 250 Telephone: 626-6349 Advisor: Judy Hurst The Family Concert Series presents quality entertainment at affordable prices for promoting family togetherness and an enjoyable experience for the metropolitan Ogden area and the Weber State University community. Students are actively involved in producing every aspect of this program which supplies a developmental and experiential opportunity. FAMILY/SPOUSE WILDCARD Location: Shepherd Union Business Office, Room 208 Office Manager: Viki Andersen Telephone: 626-7700 The Wildcard is available for students with dependents and their spouse. It admits them into Weber State Athletic events, Campus Activities Board activities, and the Swenson gym. There is a $5.00 card fee for each card and $7.00 for the spouse or dependent card. Family card requires a group picture of every member of the family. Students should contact the Academic Advisement Center to take advantage of the following services: e Assists undergraduates in planning their academic careers. ¢ Helps undergraduates resolve issues pertaining to graduation requirements, policies,and procedures. ¢ Helps students establish a sense of direction and identify possible majors. e Provides students with information about campus support services (academic and non-academic) appropriate to their needs. ¢ Provides an institutional orientation for all new students (including transfer students). ¢ Coordinates campus-wide advisement. ¢ Assists students in developing a clear understanding of general education requirements. ¢ Provides counsel and assistance to students on probation. ¢ Provides counsel and assistance to student athletes. e Assists the advising needs of students in the First Year Experience program. Services provided include academic tutoring, module reading programs, and the use of educational equipment such as computer terminals, video and audio tape players, copier and faculty reserve materials. Porter Learning Support Center is designed to assist students in completing their educational goals through the development of effective learning and reasoning processes, appropriate self-management behaviors, and meaningful life skills. These programs include Assessment and Placement, Learning Support Computer Lab and Tutoring Services. LEARNING SUPPORT COMPUTER LAB Location: Shepard Union Building, Room 310 Telephone: 626-7415 Coordinator: Clayton Oyler The Learning Support Computer Lab (LSCL) supports students and faculty with the facilitation of educational technology. LSCL includes an open lab with software support found in other open labs as well as a specialist classroom to assist students in making successful use of computer technology. This includes tutoring software such as Passkey, an interactive tutoring and diagnostic program designed by McGraw-Hill and Compass, a computer adaptive placement and support system designed by ACT. Porter The mission of Assessment/Placement is to assess the learning skills of freshman students and to assist them in formulating an individualized development plan. The assessment program is computerized and complimented by computerized tutorial programs. Assessment areas include reading, writing, math, studyskills, career goals, academic values and critical reasoning skills. RETENTION Student Service Center, Room 230 Telephone: 626-6393 Director: Steven Eichmeier Career Services helps students determine their career goals, find part-time and career employment, gain related work experience, and research career information utilizing a comprehensive career library. A professionally trained staff is available to assist with career planning, resume writing, interview techniques and employment strategies. This office also coordinates Cooperative Education and Internship Programs and on and off-campus job opportunities, including work-study and all hourly employment.
