Show Waited an Hour at Airport Standard Examiner Feby 17th 1955 Nobody Knew Mikes Wife Was By CLIFF THOMPSON SALT LAKE CITY Maria Katsenevas today was getting acquainted with her wonderful new world while several other people were trying to figure out how she arrived at the Salt Lake Airport from Greece without anyone knowing about it. Maria is the wife of Mike Katsenevas, the Clearfield Naval Supply Depot employe, who arrived yesterday to join her husband who has been here for seven years. Six of the children who had remained behind when Mike came to America seven years ago, arrived the day after Christmas in what was supposed to be the best holiday Mike ever spent. But Maria had to stay behind because of a contagious illness. When the huge airliner she was riding leveled off for a landing at the Salt Lake Airport at 827 a.m. yesterday, Maria was visioning a reunion with Mike and the two children she hadnt seen for seven years. No One at Airport But when the trim little lady stepped off the plane and watched as other passengers were met by friends and relatives, there was no one to greet her. She waited a few minutes, then walked into the waiting room and sat down thinking that maybe they had been delayed. When her wait stretched into an hour, she timidly approached the ticket desk and showed a clerk a letter she was carrying. The clerk recognized the name and address. He started telephoning, finally reaching Mike at the NSD. Happiest Reunion Marias wait wasnt quite so long this time. Mike didnt fool around getting to Salt Lake City. A group of NSD employes headed by Sandy Calhoun, president of the employes association, drove him to the Salt Lake airport where Marias tears and Mikes gigantic smile climaxed one of the happiest reunions the airline office will ever see. After a couple of hours at the airport where they posed for newspaper photographs, were interviewed for television and received the congratulations of many well wishers, Mr. and Mrs. Katsenevas went home. Some one went to get the little children who had gone to school that morning with no idea there mother was at that very moment flying over Colorado. And during all this, newspaper men and NSD employe association officials were scratching their heads. How did Maria get here without any of us knowing it was making the rounds. I sent a telegram, Maria said. But something happened to it because it never arrived. But Maria whose story has appeared in many newspapers in the nation and in Greece, had obtained a visa at Athens, flown to New York City, passed through customs and flew to Salt Lake City without attracting attention. But Mr. and Mrs. Katsenevas were not worrying about that today. Mike has been saving his annual leave just for this occasion. Mike will be away from work this week and next, NSD officials said today. Son Expected Home The oldest son James is expected home Saturday from Arizona where he is serving with the Air Force. James was flown to the U. S. from Korea last Christmas when Air Force officials heard his mother and brothers and sisters were coming. James saved half of his 30 day leave to use when his mother got here. The family wont really be complete even then. Another son, George, will come here after his discharge from the Greek army. |
