Utah Legislators Flubbed on Child Labor Bill for Teen Agers; May Be Called Back Standard April 6 1955 SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Faced by rising protests from wage earning teen agers, Gov. J. Bracken Lee yesterday offered to call a special session of the Utah Legislature for the sole purpose of correcting a piece of child labor legislation that slipped past the lawmakers at their regular session earlier this year. Such a session would take only a half a day and would be the shortest in Utah history. But it would depend on whether enough of the legislators were willing to pay their own way to the capital. Will Ask for Poll Lee said he would ask the Legislative Council to poll the lawmakers on the idea when it holds its organizational meeting Friday. Single subject of the session would be correction of a bill to lower the legal age at which boys may do farm work. Somehow, this amendment to the child labor law as passed at the regular session deleted a portion of the law which allows 14 and 15 year olds to work in stores, offices, bowling alleys and private homes. It even puts the young teenagers traditional job as baby sitter under a legal cloud. Nobody Noticed It Nobody noticed the booby trap when the law first was passed and signed by Lee. The regular session was long adjourned when the laws unlooked for effect was spotted. The result of this double take has been a storm of protest from teen agers, and from parents faced with having to up the family allowance to take up the slack. Lee said yesterday he made a big mistake in letting the bill get past him and was anxious to correct it. The bill does not do what I thought it did, and I dont believe it does what the Legislature intended, Lee said. I certainly did not mean to deprive any young folk of the chance to earn pocket money by working in such safe jobs as stores, offices or baby sitting.
