Show Open House Planned Standard April 30 55 Young Ogden Scientist Who Helped Create First Man Made Diamond Home on Short Visit DIAMOND MAKER How big is a man made diamond? About the size of this pin head and much smaller than the creations of nature mounted in these rings held by Dr. H. Tracy Hall, a former Ogdenite who helped produce the first industrial diamond, solving an old scientific problem. An open house will be held from 6 to 10 p. m. tomorrow for a brilliant young Ogden scientist who played a major role in producing the worlds first man made diamond. He is Dr. H. Tracy Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hall of 638 28th St. The open house will be held at the home of a brother, Eugene Hall, 725 35th St. Dr. Hall who is in Ogden for a few days on both a business and pleasure trip, will return to Schenectady, N. Y., Tuesday to resume work at the General Electric laboratory. He is one of four men who produced the industrial diamond. Dr. Hall, who worked on the project for four years, said he is going ahead with the diamond in an attempt to make it economically feasible. He explained that it would have to be able to compete with the natural product. I feel certain, however, that this can be done. G. E. officials figure the man made diamond costs about twice as much as a natural stone at the present time. Oldest Problem He said the man made diamond was the oldest unsolved problem of science before it was produced early in February. Science has been working on it for 125 years. The former Ogdenite developed the belt, a chamber enabling the scientist to maintain for the first time the super high pressures and temperatures for long periods of time. Using this equipment, Dr. Hall developed a method which produces diamonds in a matter of minutes. Along with the further study on the diamond problem, Dr. Hall said he plans to use the new device to determine the origin of various rocks and the cause of earthquakes. Dr. Hall is a graduate of Ogden High School and Weber College. He received a bachelors degree in chemistry from the University of Utah in 1942 and his masters degree in 1943. He worked for the U. S. Bureau of Mines until he enlisted in the Navy in April, 1944. He was serving as a radar officer when he was discharged in May, 1946. He reutrned to the University of Utah and received his doctor of philosophy degree in August, 1948. In September of 1948 he became affiliated with General Electric while on a tour of the nations leading research laboratories. CLOSER LOOK The comparative sizes of the manufactured diamond and the stones in a conventional diamond ring are shown in this close up. The pin head at left indicates the size of a manufactured diamond. |
