Ogden Standard Examiner EDITORIALS Einsteins Sardonic Role One of the most sardonic tricks played by the force of destiny saw one of the kindest of men, Albert Einstein, dead at age 76, playing a paramount role in the production of the atomic bomb, one of the most destructive of weapons. There is no doubt that his role in atomic energy was important. Encyclopedia Britannica relates The train of events that led to the bomb may be said to have started with the discovery of radioactivity by A. H. Becquerel in 1896, and the pioneer investigations of the subject by Lord Rutherford at the turn of the century. The possibility of conversion of matter into energy entered scientific discussion as a result of an equation written by Albert Einstein in 1905. Dr. Einsteins letter to President Roosevelt launched the atomic bomb project, but this action was in harmony with his humane instincts and deep sense of justice. He was afraid lest the cruel Hitler regime discover the secret first and use the energy locked up in the atom to enchain the world at Hitlers feet. Most of us have to learn of Einsteins greatness in the scientific world by reading what others have to say about him. His intellect was too massive for our understanding. But we could observe for ourselves his kindness, love of freedom, courage, modesty and above all his deep respect for the dignity of man. The American people can be proud that their land became home to the refugee driven by intolerance from the land of his birth.
