Salt Lake Tribune Dec 15th 1955 Up and Down the Street Kennecott Reports Deal For Butterfield Mines By Robert W. Bernick Tribune Business Editor Kennecott Copper Corp. Wednesday announced purchase of the Butterfield mines in the Oquirrh Range south of the big Bingham copper pit in a million dollar deal. Seller was Samuel S. Arentz, Salt Lake mining engineer who had obtained a lease and option to buy the high grade lead silver zinc producer from Combined Metals Reduction Co. Kennecott officials in New York had this statement Purchase by Kennecott Copper Corp. of the Butterfield mines property of Combined Metals Reduction Co., located in the Oquirrh Range, was announced by firm officials Wednesday. In all, about 3,800 acres of land are involved. After geologic reconnaissance, Kennecott may undertake exploration work at the property which has been an important lead zinc producer. Most of the claims on the property are patented. And these original mining claims establish the property as among the oldest in the state. Some of the locations go back as far as 1870. Combined Metals Reduction Co., Salt Lake City, obtained the mine in 1931. From that date to the present, some 500,000 tons of high grade lead silver zinc ore has been produced. It is understood that one of the principal reasons for purchase of the properties is to insure future developments at the big copper pit. However, some copper mineralization has been reported in the Butterfield ground. In addition, while Kennecotts Utah Copper Division is not engaged in lead zinc silver ore mining in this area, such a development is not outside realm of possibilities if exploration work is promising.
