TODAY IN UTAH It Was a Warm Christmas Both in Spirit and Body By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Christmas was warm in spirit and body to most Utahns this year. Churches were overflowing at Christmas Eve midnight services even more so than on Christmas Day when families gathered in the home. Bumper crops of gifts were seen under the Christmas trees to reflect economists reports of a prosperous state and nationwide economy. Rising temperatures warmed the body. Salt Lake City reported an all time record high of 59. The previous high was 50 in 1933. Highest in the state was a 62 reading at Roosevelt. Ogden reported a 59 and Provo 58. SNOW GENERALLY ABSENT Snow was generally absent from the front lawn. But several inches fell at the ski resort slopes at Alta and Brighton. Some sportsmen played golf, others went skiing. It was not warm and gay for all however. A 23 year old Brigham Young University student, Dayton McGregor of St. George, was killed in the first few minutes of Christmas Day when the car he was in crashed into a bridge abutment on U. S. Highway 91 east of St. George. More than a dozen births were reported in Salt Lake City hospitals on the birthday of the Christ Child. One was a son, born to Mrs. S. F. Blackburn, wife of a busy baby doctor of Salt Lake General Hospital. CHRISTMAS SERVICES Choral music filled churches during all Christmas services. A 60 voice choir and 16 piece string orchestra presented Handels Messiah at the Cottonwood First Ward of the Latter day Saints Church. Sermons stressed The example of life as lived by Jesus Christ. They joyful mystery of Christmas for us is that Christ walked with us in human paths, said an Episcopalian minister, the Rev. Mortimer Chester, and through Him we learned to know God in our common days. Said Fenwick T. Fowler, a Baptist minister Jesus was the great Transformer.
