Each student who comes into the program meets with an advisor. Together they explore the student's academic needs and the resources available to develop an individualized system of support. Qualification Criteria Enrollment for Student Support Services is limited to 320 qualified students per year who meet at least one of the following eligibility guidelines: • Students who demonstrate a financial need • First generation college students • Disabled students (physical or learning disability) The following services are available to qualified participants: Tutoring & Basic Skills Instruction • Diagnostic testing to determine collegiate skills in English, reading, math and study skills • Math competency workshops • Writing workshops • Speed reading and basic keyboarding workshops • Computer aided instruction • Tutoring for lower and upper division classes • Tutors work with students mainly on a one-on-one basis and occasionally in small groups • Tutoring program is nationally certified through the College Reading & Learning Association • Supplemental Instruction program Free Seminar Series "Becoming a Successful Student" • Open to the entire campus community • Series topics: Time management, note taking, study skills, learning styles, self-esteem and motivational issues, test taking and test anxiety reduction Supplemental Instruction Telephone: 801-626-6409 Location: Student Services, Suite 269 Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides opportunities for students in specific freshman level courses as designated in the class schedule. Students may participate in learning teams where they explore concepts and solve problems through group discussion and interaction as directed by a student team leader who has successfully completed the course. The SI Program • Targets traditionally difficult courses • Identifies high-risk classes rather than high-risk students • Available in all subject areas ranging from social sciences to natural sciences and mathematics • On average, students who attend SI receive one half to a whole grade higher than students in the same class who do not • Is a nationally recognized academic assistance program SI Study Sessions • Regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer facilitated, volunteer group study sessions • Students may review their notes, complete homework, discuss class lectures, prepare for a quiz or a test, or discuss the next days topic SI Instructors/Peer Leaders • WSU students who have recently completed the class with an A- or A letter grade • Receive eight hours of comprehensive training before starting their teaching assignment • Attend a series of bi-weekly training sessions throughout the term • Regularly attend the class that they are providing supplemental instruction for • Hold 3-5 SI sessions outside the classroom each week • Meet with their supervisor every week • Meet with the faculty member as required by the faculty member Testing Center Telephone: 801-626-6803 Location & Hours: Student Services, Room 262 7:30 am - 9 pm Mon-Thurs 7:30 am - 5:30 pm Fri 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Sat Science Lab. Room 36 7:30 am - 9 pm Mon-Thurs 7:30 am - 5:30 pm Fri 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Sat Davis Campus, Room 125a Hours vary each semester College Entrance Exams • The National ACT test is administered five times each year • The Residual ACT is administered at least once a month • Test dates and registration deadlines are available in the Student Services Testing Center English/Math Placement Tests & CLEP Tests • Placement tests administered daily in the Student Services and Davis Testing Centers • CLEP exams given on the 3rd Saturday of each month and on a walk-in basis in the summer • Students may earn as many as 38 general education credits by taking all four CLEP tests • Credit may be earned for satisfactory scores on department- selected CLEP subject examinations • Register for the CLEP exams in the Student Services Testing Center Career and Personal Development Tests • Administered in the Student Services and Davis Testing Centers on a walk-in basis • Students must be referred by a Career or Personal Development Counselor so that the results can be interpreted to meet the specific purpose Graduate School Admission Tests • The GRE, MCAT and the Miller Analogy tests are administered by the Testing Center, which also provides registration information • Most graduate school admission tests are given on specific test dates.
