Software Skills for Business (1) Software Skills for Business is a one-credit course where all students in business and economics demonstrate current competence in desktop software commonly used in the business environment. The course involves a series of self-paced lessons on the web that cover computer competencies students will use in their business functional and cross-functional core courses. It is followed by a hands-on exam that tests these competencies. Students may do the online review lessons and take the exam at their own pace during the semester. The exam is a prerequisite for IS&T 2100, 2110, and 3110. Completion of IS&T 2000 and either TBE 1504, or LibSci 2201 or LibSci 2202 meets the WSU computer and information literacy requirement. Prerequisite: TBE TE1700 or equivalent. IS&T 2100. Introduction to Information Technology (3) Introduces the student to the fundamental concepts of information technology and the role played by computer technology in business strategy. This course provides students with foundation material concerning software development, hardware, operating systems, career paths, project planning, and systems. Corequisite: IS&T 2000. IS&T SI2110. Software Development I (3) F, S Introduces the student to the fundamentals of software development including tools, techniques, logic, and flow control. Students will apply these techniques while mastering the fundamentals of a programming language. Prerequisite: IS&T 2100 and Math 1050. IS&T 2130. Software Development II (3) F, S This course builds on the software development skills learned in IS&T SI2110. The course continues with the intermediate features of a software development language. Topics covered include program constructs, file management techniques, and software development practices and methodologies for a multi-tiered, distributed computing environment. Prerequisite: IS&T SI2110. IS&T 2510. Database Design and Implementation (3) F, S This course provides a comprehensive coverage of business database systems. Students will learn how to design, implement and manage databases. They will also learn how to use the Structured Query Language (SQL). Prerequisite: IS&T 2100. IS&T 2520. Data Communications (3) F, S A comprehensive examination of the managerial and technological issues of distributed information systems. Course emphasis will be emerging standards for interoperability in data communications, network management, and information presentation. Prerequisite: IS&T 2100. IS&T 2610. NetWare 5 Administration [Novell Course 560] (3) F, S This is the introductory course to Novell 5 Administration involving setting up, managing, and using basic network services, including file systems, network printing, security, and Z.E.N. Works. After completing this course and successfully passing the Novell test, the candidate becomes a Certified Novell Administrator (CNA).Prerequisite: Computer Competency or TBE TE1700.Cross listed with TBE. Network Technologies [Novell Course 565] (2) 5 This course in the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) series includes terms and concepts used in the computer networking industry in order to make informed decisions. NetWare 5 Advanced Administration [Novell Course 570] (3) F This is the third course in the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) series involving planning the directory structure, managing the NDS database, configuring time synchronization, managing a diverse network, and tuning server performance. NDS Design and Implementation [Novell Course 575] (2) 5 This is the fourth course in the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) series including designing and implementing NetWare and the sequence of the associated tasks, as well as the dependencies of each task.Tasks include designing NetWare, determining the migration strategy, and creating an implementation schedule. Service and Support [Novell Course 580] (3) F This course in the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) series includes configuring and installing hardware for NetWare servers and workstations. IntraNetWare: Integrating Windows NT [Novell Course 555] (2) S This course covers the fundamentals of Windows NT networking and how to integrate Windows NT with a NetWare network. Network Management Using ManageWise [Novell Course 730] (1) This course uses ManageWise for effective network management and includes the integrated ManageWise components: NetExplorer, ManageWise Console (including Desktop Manager), and ManageWise Agents. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) F, S Open to all associate degree-seeking students who have been selected to serve an internship in the information technology field or who have identified a special IS&T project with their current employer, subject to approval by the IS&T department. Information Technology for Business (3) F, S This course provides students hands-on experience with information technology tools useful for academic and professional activities. It will prepare students to use information technologies effectively to improve productivity and promote competitive position in the marketplace. Prerequisite: IS&T 2000. IS&T 3410. Advanced PC Hardware/Software (3) F This course provides knowledge necessary to provide desktop support to an organization. It covers advanced PC topics such as hardware and software selection, evaluation, benchmarking, installation, and trouble-shooting as well as interfacing and optimizing computing resources. Prerequisite: IS&T 2510, IS&T 2520, Acctng 2010, Econ SS2010, and Quant SI2600. IS&T 3530. Systems Analysis & Design (3) F, S Provides the knowledge and skills to design and implement computer-based systems to solve business problems. Topics include feasibility studies, requirements analysis, system design and development, implementation and testing. Computer-aided software engineering tools are used to support these tasks. Prerequisites: IS&T 2510, IS&T 2520, Acctng 2010, Econ SS2010, and Quant SI2600. IS&T 3610. Local Area Networks (3) F This course will provide students with knowledge of network operating systems (NOS). Different NOS will be compared and studied. Both installation and administration of computer networks will be covered. Students will be equipped with theory as well as hands-on experience. Prerequisite: IS&T 3520; or, CS 3710 with departmental approval and Business Foundations. IS&T 3620. Internetworking (3) S This course will cover the Internet and intranets. Included are principles of architecture, layering, multiplexing, encapsulation, addressing and address mapping, routing, naming, Internet management, and new theories and technologies of internetworking. Prerequisite: IS&T 2520. IS&T 3710. Global Issues in Information Technology (3) F, S How information technology is used as a key competitive weapon by multinational and transnational businesses. Topics include global perspectives on coordination and control, cultural dimensions, and geo-political considerations of global information technology applications. Prerequisites: Acctng 2010, Econ SS2010, and Quant SI2600. IS&T 4410. E-Business Technologies (3) F, S This course provides students with knowledge of technologies needed in planning, implementing, and supporting an e-business operation. Topics discussed include e-business site preparation & construction, search engine, three-tier architecture & supporting software, database-driven web pages, ADO objects & ASP creation, e- business application languages, markup languages, on-line payment mechanism, systems reliability & security, scalability analysis, vendor solutions, and mistakes to avoid. Prerequisite: IS&T 3530. IS&T 4510. Client/Server Development (3) F Implementation of client/server database systems emphasizing development, application and management of distributed databases using current database methodologies and design/development tools. Prerequisite: IS&T 2510 and Business Foundations. IS&T 4600. Computer Forensics (3) In a computer-literate age, sophisticated criminals use computers in their illegal and destructive activities. This course discusses cyber crime and teaches students how to: recognize the patterns of an impending attack; detect attacks; set up a secure environment; and use tools to investigate cyber crime. IS&T 4710. Enterprise Software Development (3) F, S This course covers the creation and integration of enterprise applications using object-oriented programming and distributed object technology. Topics include design issues for enterprise system development, application architectures, and integrating legacy data and applications with new enterprise systems. Students will use a state-of-the-art practices to develop and implement systems. Prerequisite: IS&T 4410. IS&T 4720. Emerging Information Technologies (3) S New information technologies can give early adopters significant competitive advantage when used with careful planning, or they can mean disaster if hastily implemented. This course covers how to conduct an environmental scan toward evaluating and implementing new information technologies. Prerequisites: IS&T 2510, IS&T 2520, IS&T 3530. IS&T 4730. Senior Project (3) F, S This is a capstone course for the IS&T major. It provides hands-on and problem-solving experience in all areas of information technology including systems analysis, design, systems implemen- 183 tation, network design, software development, and database design. Students will participate as a member of a team to complete a proposal or a project for a significant computer-based system. This course focuses on working with actual business problems as represented in a major case study. Prerequisites: IS&T 4510 and senior standing. IS&T 4801, 4802, 4803. Individual Projects (1-3) F, S This course is open only to senior IS&T majors. Students will be required to complete an individual project, program, system, or research paper which will enhance their skills and marketability. Prerequisite: Senior standing and acceptance of the student's proposal by the faculty. IS&T 4891,4892,4893,4894. Cooperative Work Experience (1-4) F, S Open to all students who have completed the Business Foundations classes and who have been selected to serve an internship in the information technology field or who have identified a special IS&T project with their current employer, subject to approval by the IS&T department. Information and Communication Technologies for E-Business (3) F Covers the information and communications technology infrastructure required to support a robust e-business activity. Issues such as reliability, scalability, security, and responsiveness as well as n-tier architectures are reviewed. Prerequisite: MPAcc, MBA, or IT Certificate Program standing. IS&T 5930. Professional Development Workshop in Information Technology (1-4) Information technology professionals must remain current with new technologies to remain competitive in their careers. This course offers professional development in new systems and software as they enter the mainstream of information technology practice. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. IS&T 6620. Databases & Information Systems (3) F This course covers the role of database technology in information systems. Through hands-on and conceptual knowledge, students will learn how databases are used to construct and operate information systems designed to support decision making. Various aspects of database systems including both correct methods and problems encountered during the design, implementation and operation of database systems will be covered. Students will gain hands-on familiarity with a relational database system. Prerequisite: Admittance to MPAcc program and IS&T 3110 or equivalent. IS&T 6630. Networking & Information Systems (3) S This course covers the role of networking technology in information systems. Through hands-on and conceptual knowledge, students will learn how data communications and networks are used to facilitate decentralized and distributed systems in support of decision making. Various aspects of networking including standards, media, network design and applications will be covered. Students will gain hands-on familiarity with a local area network and the Internet.
