Show 214 taken to complete the BSHS in Dental Hygiene degree. Sixteen more upper division hours are selected by the student from a menu of courses. Transcripts of transfer students will be evaluated on an individual basis. Transfer students must also complete the residency requirement (30 credit hours of WSU course work). Advisement Bachelor of Science Dental Hygiene majors must complete a contract with the Dental Hygiene Program Director. Admission Requirements An Advanced Dental Hygiene major contract must be completed with the Dental Hygiene Program Director prior to beginning the advanced courses. General Education Refer to pages 35-39 of this catalog for Bachelor of Science requirements. Any general education requirements not taken as part of the A.S. program must be completed in order to graduate with a B.S. degree. Course Requirements for B.S. Degree To be taken in addition to the courses required for an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene. Dental Science Courses Required (7 credit hours) A total of seven additional DenSci credit hours are required. Three of these must come from DenSci 4780 - Baccalaureate Thesis or DenSci 4530 - Principles and Application of Evidence-based Dental Hygiene Practice. Four additional hours must come from DenSci 4890 ■ Advanced Community or Clinical Work Experience. DenSci 4780 or 4530 may be used to fulfill 3 credit hours of the WSU scientific inquiry B.S. requirement. All courses required for the major must be successfully completed with a grade of "C" or better (a "C-" grade is not acceptable). » Credit Hour Requirements: A total of 44 credit hours of dental science course work is required for the associate degree. Additionally, 35 hours of prerequisites are necessary. Students must also complete nine additional hours to meet WSU requirements for the A.S. degree. Total credit hour requirements equal 88 hours. Advisement Prospective students are advised by the advisement counselors in the College of Health Professions Advisement office. Admission Requirements The science prerequisite courses are listed below and must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.25 prior to being admitted into the program. These basic science courses must have been taken within five years of the date of anticipated enrollment in the Dental Hygiene Program. At least one course in the additional five hours must be a Physical Science approved general education course. This application package can be obtained from the Advisement Office in the College of Health Professions (1-800- 350-7042 in Utah). The application package will call for letters of reference, current transcripts and ACT scores, and verification of previous health- related work experience. Applicants are required to take a dexterity test offered through the WSU Testing Center. The application deadline for Fall Semester enrollment is February 25 of each year. A $10.00 application fee must be paid at the time the application is submitted. General Education Refer to pages 37-39 for Associate of Science requirements. The majority of general education requirements for the AS degree are taken as prerequisites to the program. Concepts of Community Dental Health (1) This course will present the basic concepts of planning and implementing community dental health programs. These principles include epidemiology, sociological concepts of health and illness, health behavior, public attitudes and principles of dental health education. 2205. Head/Neck and Dental Anatomy (2) Identification of major anatomical landmarks of the head and neck, their innervation, blood supply and function. Also includes instruction in the histology and embryology of head and neck development and tooth morphology. 2206. Clinical Dental Hygiene/Radiology (4) Clinical application of principles of DenSci 2207 and DenSci 2208. Must accompany DenSci 2207 and DenSci 2208. Three four-hour labs each week. 2207.
