Sunday 6:00 p.m. -1:00 a.m. Key Programs and Services The Shepherd Union Building promotes a strong sense of community for Weber State University through programs, services, and facilities which include: Art Services Room 220, phone 801-626-6374 • Provides expert promotional and marketing assistance, including graphic design and custom designed t-shirts, posters, logos, and banners. • Engraves plaques, badges, name plates, campus ADA signage and awards. Business Services Room 230, phone 801-626-7195/7123 • Offers check cashing services for students, faculty and staff. • Provides financial policy training for student organizations (ARO groups, sport clubs, etc.). • Provides accounts for 30 ARO groups on campus. College Bowl Room 280c, phone 801-626-7424 • A form of Jeopardy-with-an-Attitude as the Varsity Sport of the Mind that consists of teams formed from clubs, honor societies, Greeks, or groups of friends. • Teams compete for campus honors and cash awards, and the winning team and top players have an opportunity to represent Weber State University in a regional tournament. • Each team's knowledge and aptitude are tested on a variety of subjects, including history, mythology, current events, mathematics, international relations, literature and sports. Diversity Center Room 240, phone 801-626-8032 • Serves as a resource center to develop an appreciation of all people through exposure to differences and similarities of culture, ideas, and backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, race, national origin, sexual orientation or physical qualities. • Provides programming support services and training on cultural awareness and diversity issues. • Coordinates activities which affirm cultures and heritages while also exposing them to new people, perspectives and experiences (includes Cinco de Mayo and Black History Month programs). Event Scheduling Office Room 230, phone 801-626-7285/7491 • The Shepherd Union offers eight meeting rooms, a 1,000-person capacity ballroom, Wildcat Theater, and other multi-purpose areas for campus and community use. IMPACT Council Room 280c, phone 801-626-7772 • Provides social, recreational, educational, and technological (online) activities and programs that enhance the sense of community in the Shepherd Union Building and throughout WSU. • Provides valuable co-curricular student learning experiences. Information Center Room 230, phone 801-626-6367 • Provides information about all of the programs and special events that take place in the Union and throughout the campus. • Maps of the campus, TTD phone, bus schedules, vending refunds, and lost and found center for Shepherd Union Building, and Shepherd Union event ticket office. Wildcat Lanes & Game Center Room 295, phone 801-626-6376/8987 • Serves as a full service recreational and social facility, with bowling (automatic scoring), billiards and video games. Group reservations for University departments and student and community organizations are available. • Offers bowling and billiard classes (one credit courses). • Provides on-campus student employment opportunities which emphasize skill development in customer service, program coordination, leadership, business operations and marketing. • Additional services which are also available for evening students include UTA bus passes, photocopies, scantrons, class schedules, pencils, etc. Student Activities and recreation Student Activities Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 801-626-6349 Director: Judy Hurst The Department of Student Activities is dedicated to the personal growth and development of students. This department has responsibility for the following: The Associated Students of Weber State University (ASWSU), Student Senate, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Student Community Service Learning Programs, Volunteer Involvement Programs (VIP), the Association for Registered Organizations (ARO), Student Leadership Development programs, Greek Life (fraternities & sororities), Family Concerts, Open Hour & Convocations. An experiential environment for learning and practicing "life skills" is provided by empowering students and providing opportunities for leadership, personal development and service. Through participation in educational, social, cultural and recreational programs, Student Activities seeks to expand and enrich the entire campus and local community. Association of Registered Organizations (ARO) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Room 250 Telephone: 801-626-6349 Over 100 clubs and organizations provide students with opportunities to put their education to work. Through such activities as our Welcome Weeks, the Association of Registered Organizations serves as a liason between its member groups and the University at large to promote and highlight the various benefits of involvement and participation. Whether your interests are academic, professional, civic, athletic, religious, political, cultural or social, students are encouraged to augment their collegiate experience by joining an ARO group. Weber State University Campus Activities Board (CAB) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 801-626-6349 Advisor: Georgette Gonzalez For students who want to make the most of their college experience, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) is the ideal opportunity. CAB is comprised of eight student committees which plan, promote, and produce over 170 events each year, including weekly movies, nationally known entertainers, spontaneous midday events and annual events. Committees include: Cinema, Cultural Programs, Family Programs, Special Events, Super Events, Off Broadway, Games & Recreation, and The Lair. Membership in these organizations provides students the opportunity to build life-long friendships through a mutual commitment to involvement in programs and activities which bebefit the individual, the campus and the community. In addition, membership provides students with support in their academic efforts, leadership opportunities and social interaction. Five fraternities — Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Gamma Chi, Sigma Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Psi — and five sororities — Otyokwa, LaDianaeda, Lambda Delta Sigma, Sharmea, Sigma Gamma Rho — encourage all students to experience Greek Life. Open Hour Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Room 250 Telephone: 801-626-6349 Open Hour is from 10:00 to 11:15 a.m. every Thursday. This time is set aside for the campus community to take advantage of the various available programs. The design for Open Hour is broad in nature and consists of campus, departmental, and organizational activities. The Open Hour is designed to achieve two basic goals: to expand the educational and cultural horizons of the Weber State University campus community, and to create and enhance the sense of community at WSU by fostering increased interaction and mutual support among faculty, staff, students, and the community. Formal programs during Open Hour include: Convocations Lecture Series This convocation series supplements formal classroom education by bringing in speakers of national stature and/or authorities in diversified areas. Attendees have the opportunity to examine specific issues, to be introduced to famous people and their lifestyles and values, and to explore new and unique ideas. Issues Forum The Issues Forum uses debates among members of the campus community, panel discussions, seminars, and question and answer sessions. The goal of this program is to enhance critical thinking and stimulate thought on a variety of topics, from local political issues to basic philosophical questions, and exposes the campus community to scholarly dialogue. 27 Student Leadership Programs Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 801-626-6349 Participation in the following programs provides leadership opportunities in addition to personal development: • Fall Student Leadership Conference - is open to all students on campus and is designed to provide leadership opportunities and instruction in an informal setting. It is held prior to the beginning of Fall semester. • Campus Outreach - is a monthly program of leadership instruc tion and experiences presented by Weber State students to local high school leaders. • Profiles in Leadership - is a monthly forum for the benefit and enrichment of the students on campus. It is designed to introduce them to local leaders and gives them an opportunity for discussing leadership styles and issues. Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) Location: Department of Student Activities Shepherd Union, Second Level Telephone: 801-626-6349 Advisor: Christine Colestock The student service projects of ASWSU include Alternative Spring Break, Best Buddies, Bridging the Gap, Christmas Tree Express, Family Services Projects, Environmental Projects, One Shot Service Projects, Shared Learning Tutors, and Special Olympics Team. VIP is committed to involving students in meaningful service opportunities. The WSU Community Service Center connects WSU students and employees with meaningful volunteer opportunities in our community. Through its referral services, the center publishes opportunity listings, registers service hours, and provides recognition to WSU volunteers. Campus Recreation Location: Health and Physical Education Center (HPEC), Room 22 Telephone: 801-626-6972 Director: John Knight The Department of Campus Recreation is responsible for providing for the recreational needs of the students, faculty, staff and associated community members through a variety of programs and facilities. This is accomplished by involvement in the following programs: Intramurals, Informal Recreation, Sport Clubs and the Wilderness Recreation Center. Facilities include a swimming pool; ten (10) racquetball courts; seven (7) outdoor tennis courts; conditioning areas (weights/aerobics); gym floors (basketball/volleyball/tennis); a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track; aerobics classes; strength training; play fields; and an outdoor, one- mile exercise trail.
